Old regatta prank is to put a clevis pin or a ring-ding or two in the competition’s mainsail, so it falls on the deck when they hoist in the morning and they have to check every connection on the rig. Not nice.

I have no interesting stories about spokes.

I can't even imagine being a fielder playing behind her, waiting in vain all game for the ball to come your way . . . . . . and nothing.

Yes, spokes have gotten expensive! And difficult to source, from here anyway. I might have a dozen new ones in my stash, from years ago when I could get them. I make a point of using new nipples with my old spokes. I have even gone as far as mixing double butted and straight guage in the same wheel, and horror of horrors, black and silver in the same wheel. My riding these days is on flat terrain and smelling the roses style. I have no concerns about mixing used spoke types in the same wheel.
I do know at one point I had a single silver spoke in an otherwise all black wheel.
Agreed generally about using used nipples - it's not that I'm concerned about their strength, it's mostly that they're usually some form of rounded off and a PITA to use.
You can probably imagine that because of that I don't use anything fancier than DT Competition.
I've actually found the best deals on spokes from eBay - usually new but out of box and sold in lots. I picked up 40 unused but dirty 1.8mm straight gage for like $20 not to long ago.

You wouldn't have time. The mound is 43' from the plate. The pitcher releases the ball when she is about 4' inside of that. Average pitcher in college throws over 60 mph. That's about 90' per second. You have less than one half of a second to duck, roll up, and cry like a little girl. Can't be done.
Or how about you just stand with one foot in the batters box, reach out with one arm and leave your bat extended over the plate, hoping she'll hit it by mistake.

The best men's fastpitch are topping out over 80. It's insane.

That's some awesome performance right there. I can't even imagine something that fast coming at me, I play slow pitch in a senior league.

Not likely. Trautwein missed the bats of 21 experienced college hitters who were TRYING to hit the ball. Even though Ark-PB is one of the weaker teams in D1, you can bet that every one of those players is an amazing athlete that has been playing the game since they were young.

My daughter pitched and played 1st when she was playing, but that was before high school. Switched to volleyball full time in high school.
Ended up giving it up as she wanted to go to a D1 school (UT - the real one), and at 5'9" was not tall enough (6'2" was the cutoff) for the middle blocker position that she always played.

My daughter has been 100% softball since she started playing at 8yo. She was the starting catcher and 1st team all-league as the only freshman on her HS team (she's a junior now), and has always been one of the top players on her travel teams. She's gotten some recent interest from D1 colleges, but she doesn't want the intensity of the D1 athlete experience. A D2 or D3 school will probably be a better fit for that part of her journey.
I have a niece that was a scholarship soccer player at a D1 school in Illinois. She quit and gave up her scholarship after just one year because with the sports commitment could not keep up her grades or enjoy life. She's now an engineer. My daughter learned from her, and wanted a "college experience" (football games, boyfriend, and good grades) so decided to just play recreationally while in school. She does have her name on a plaque in UT's main gym because her sorority volleyball team won the intramural championship her senior year. She's now a CPA with one of the Big 4.

Mo will confirm -
In a sail boat race, it's quite a thing to throw a bolt, nut, clevis pin, or similar into the sail of the boat below you so when it rolls down the sail and lands in the cockpit all eyes are looking up to see if the mast is falling down. Thus the other boat loses speed and position due to distraction.

A friend used to race road bikes here and got to cat2, I think. He could make the sound of a tire blowing out and it was incredibly realistic. He would sneak up to someone and make the sound and when they looked to check he would take off. He did this on club rides and it was convincing.
He sometimes would grab the back of a riders' shorts and hook it over the saddle. Nasty.
On a club ride one of the women was dueling with a guy we didn't know up this 3 mile climb and he got ahead of her near the top. Prankster guy comes along and pushes her up to 20 mph, or so. and slams on his brakes just as she passes the guy she was racing.

So much of club/travel sports pushes the idea that playing the sport at the highest level is the goal. That works for some kids, but not everyone. We have learned along the way that D1 athletes tend to be athletes first, and then try to make school fit around the program. Often, the academic paths available to a D1 athletes are limited. My daughter wants a little bit more flexibility and a less-regimented experience. There is a local D3 that has recruited the SS on her team, my daughter has also caught the coach's attention. It might end up being a good place for her. She loves the environment of OR and WA, so she's looking at schools in that area, too. Playing D2 or D3 will also increase the likelihood that she will not spend a lot of time on the bench, which also appeals to her.
