Fishing lines tangled in overhead wires at Lake Johnson in NC. Busy place, evidently.

Some years ago I discovered something similar when stopped on a bridge spanning the Snoqualmie River; it's been there every time I've passed by, going on four years now:

I love that picture. I used to ride past a richly festooned overhead power line just like that along a backwater of Lake Champlain in Addison, Vermont. It always struck me as a perfect image of failure and loss--something that's permanently and irrevocably gone, even though it's still right there in front of you--almost, but not quite within reach.

I probably saw your power line while leading trips for Vermont Bicycle Touring back in the '80s.

Bike Vermont was the slightly-cheaper competitor to VBT, I believe. Bike Vermont abbreviated itself as BVT, which was uncoincidentally somewhat similar to Vermont Bicycle Tour's abbreviation, which was VBT. I wonder how many tour customers thought they were signing up with one, but actually ended up with the other?

Ha! I used to lead tours for Bike Vermont, from 2004 to about 2015. That's how I happened to ride by the place I mentioned so often. If you approach the Lake Champlain Bridge from the West Addison side, and take the left just before the bridge, you come to the power line about a mile or two down the road, also on your left.

You used to see a bumper sticker then, "Moonlight in Vermont or Starve." I myself have always adhered to the traditional Vermont tactic of living somewhat on income, but mostly on lack of expense. Especially in the days of my youth.

Sinkhole in Cary NC. Photo taken with the camera held above the Cyclone fence across the (new) edge of the parking lot bitten into by the collapse.
