I've been unsigned for almost 3 years now. College put a damper on my time and money, so I essentially just hunted stuff on Strava. I'm back now and I'm considering looking for a team, but I'm not pushing for it due to focusing on a non-local race. My main squeeze this year is to do a few local road races to gain leg speed and get comfy in a pack again before the Belgian Waffle Ride in May. I'd be a great sacrificial lamb for a P/1/2 team, but there aren't any here in Salem.

Had a total blast at "El Tour" de Tucson this year with my best finish of 36/a few thousand. But a very commanding 36th at that! Finishing time was 4:04 and change. Places 1-35 finished at 3:53
I was the best of group two on the road this year. Group 1 broke away on Old Spanish Trail about 1 hour in, featuring some stair step climbs that blew everything up. Group 1 also featured Eric Marcotte, Quinn Simmons (current Junior RR world champ) and a few other domestic Mexican and American pros. I started the climb near the back of the pack figuring that there was no way I'd stick with the leaders and that I'd just pass people up the climb and get seeded where I got seeded. This may have been a mistake, more on that briefly.
Fast forward a bit and it's pretty clear to me that I am one of the stronger ones, doing a lion's share of the work and leaving the draft every time it slowed so I could hit the front and keep my momentum. With about an hour to go things fell apart in the headwind on Silverbell and I was getting tired of pulling all the time, doubtful anyone could hang with me. At mile 91/100 I thought I'd roll the dice and attacked up the right side of the road and got clear.
It was fun for a few minutes b/c I could tell that I was just putting in time on the pack. The road was mostly straight with some minor bends and after a while I was out of sight. Things def. started to hurt a bit but it was fun having my own personal escort as there was a police moto at the front of group 2 (now me) signalling the officers at each intersection to stop traffic. After a few more painful minutes it became apparent that I was likely going to solo in, so I got a second wind, even though my HR was pinned right under LTHR for 20+ minutes.
I entered the finishing straight with time to savor it and crossed the line comfortably with about 30s up on 36th. Very happy with my performance.
In retrospect I regret not fighting for position going into the climbs that separate the men from the boys and relegating myself to group 2. I was very clearly the best rider in group 2, not only by my placing but also the way I went about it. If I show up next year with similar fitness, I will fight to stay up front more, even if it means I'll be doing a lot more wheel sucking .

Awesome job tmonk. Holding off a pack for 9 miles at the end of 100 miles is super pro.

Had to start my week off the bike early because when I got off the trainer my ass was bleeding (not that part, the cheek). Really really bad rash, so I'm going to have to let it heal. Spent 6 hours working on the house, I'm going to try to get a bunch of projects done, its so hot out here you really can't do yardwork or garage stuff in the summer (I suppose you can, but its 115 in the garage and the yard hardens like cement).
That's a pretty legit result TMonk

More of the same training for me. My wife and I did a 40k team time trial segment starting at the South gate of Camp Pendleton going North through San Onofre state beach. For the entire course, we knocked off 12 minutes off our best previous time and the 40k segment was 1:12 on road bikes having to maneuver a couple of stops, gates and other road furniture. The 12 minute reduction was monstrous and we had the wind against us in both directions. One may ask how is that possible. The wind was from the NE when we started and shifted to the WSW on the way back.

Lots of base and SS with good weather recently. 10k runs, two b2b 3 and 4 hr rides pulling myself.
So, I have to get over pee pee anxiety. I’m a person that uses a stall if available.
I posted up asking if anyone wanted to join yesterday. A former cat 3 racer girl posted up to join. I’ve never ridden in just a training pair with a girl.
About half way I have to go badly. Normally I’d pull off and find a tree. I held it instead then because of holding it didn’t want to drink.
I was so dehydrated by the end. Lol. Gotta get over that.

Headed over the mountains to Bend for the holiday. I had grand plans of bringing my gravel bike, but the highs are predicted to be in the teens with snow actively falling. Maybe I'll just bring the DH skis and hope Mt. Bachelor opens up on Friday.

It was a great day for a few hours ride. Clear, 60 deg, bit of wind, and the trees had finally changed color. Traffic light with folks at work.
I really appreciated the company. Longer solo rides can be lonely and it’s safer. Very competent rider and easy going. Just the right combo of riding and chatting.
I don’t avoid riding with ladies, doesn’t matter to me, just who was around. I’m not picky.
Off day today and maybe pickup a Z tt race tomorrow.

Rest week officially engaged. Capped things off with about 400 TSS split between S and Su, big one yesterday. I'm tired.
Outside of bike commuting a few days (7-10 mi/trip), this week will feature a short jog, a swim, and some light Fiesta Island time on the TT bike, focus on position and not power.

Wife and I are in Maui over Thanksgiving. We rented Specialized Roubaix and did a 32 mile out and back ride this AM.
There was a Grand Fondo yesterday that was a 60 mile loop around the north part of the island. However, the trade winds were blowing 30 mph minimum with gusts to 50 mph plus rain on some sections - passed on that. Yesterday, the ocean waves were running parallel to the beach and red flag warnings posted for surfing. I think if one went in the water, if was possible to be blown out to sea.

Registered for a race in April (Barry Roubaix), so I guess its time to start riding again...
50 minutes on the trainer last night on Zwift. Just getting the legs moving, did like 2 short "efforts". Need to actually think about doing intervals and get some kind of plan together.

Took a full week completely off the bike, which is always hard for me. What helped was during a 2 hour ride I got 'trainer rub' on my cheek to the point it bleed and formed a big scab. Visited my family in SF, installed 3 small sheds. Got a ton of work done. Sometimes I think I should hang up the bike and completely focus on fixing up our house. Its not a fixer upper by any means but we have a backyard the size of a hockey rink filled with weeds and every year my half assed attempts to eradicate it fail. I could make it into a nice area if I put the time into it.
I took my wife down to the beach at Pacifica to show her the waves; we had a few crash over the rocks and onto our Jeep. Then when we got out near the pier she got hit with one from the waist down.
The waves were at this spot and about twice as big
Pacifica is probably one of the worst beach towns in California but the one thing they have over the other town are storm waves.
Some of our areas are like that (because of the Santa Ana Winds). When I punctured my lung I was rolling 30-35 on the flats and was sure I'd get a KOM on the bike trail, which is one of our most ridden segments.

Just signed up for a 6-week training plan to see if a coach can make me faster than I can make myself. It'll be nice to just follow a set workout plan again.

Back from Maui.
We drove the fondo course to see the terrain. It reminded us of a combination of New Zealand and Tahiti where parts of the road was steep and very punchy climbing to long stretches of road right along the ocean similar to some islands in Tahiti. The rugged terrain is hard cycling and requires an A game both in fitness and skill. This is a pic from the hilly stretch the day before the real wind came and it is very windy. My wife is too light to ride in really windy conditions as she can be blown off the road.
I am looking a little beastly in this pic. I am taking a play out of the @Doge junior's playbook and bulking up in the gym to slim down later...maybe. What is interesting is that I have a lot of power right now and endurance is not bad. We will see.
This was pretty funny. The bike shop names their bikes.

Good times @Hermes. My fiancee had a sister who lived in Kaanapali for years and I loved the visit and the dynamic nature of the scenery on the islands on different sides. Kapalua is right on the winward/leeward edge where you can see dry landscapes and rainbows/clouds/rainforest on the same slope of the volcanoes. I remember thinking as we drove north (clockwise) that the roads were incredibly hilly/punchy and that it looked difficult for cycling.
This morning I did 15' on the trainer (TT bike), then a 15' jog around the neighborhood, then a 7 mi. commute to work on the MTB.
Latter two in torrential rain! Felt like I needed a freakin' snorkel. Thee storms that N. Cal./PNW are passing down to us are short but quite voluminous. At <40 min (elapsed) and 60 F, the commute wasn't bad, almost fun. Not long enough to be miserable yet.

@TMonk We stayed in Kaanapali and went to just hang out for TG. We thought about renting electric bikes but all they had were clunky stuff. According to the bike shop there are three rides on Maui - Road to Hana, Haleakala and the 60 mile ride around the north part of the island. All three are pretty hard and need an A game for sure. On a previous trip to Maui, we drove the road to Hana and to the volcano as well as a helo ride to the volcano.

I've done that north coast ride. You're not kidding. There's one pitch that comes out of a little creek crossing and seems to go straight up. It's not long, but dang is it steep.

I log all of my lifting workouts in a notebook. It's a 200 page, spiral bound, 3x5 booklet. I'm near the end, and it's pretty beat up. I looked back at the date of the first workout I recorded in there - 1/6/13. Didn't realize I'd been using it so long. I figure there's at least 500 sessions lifting sessions recorded in there.

Yesterday was climbing on Mount Soledad and then gym leg strength training and two hours of piano practice (hippocampus is getting a great workout).
Here is a pic from the top of Mount Soledad looking north. When I say I do a coastal ride, it is along route observed in this pic.

FTP test last night after an off/on holiday hiatus. I shot myself in the foot with a massive greasy lunch and no pre-ride nutrition, so the number is about 30W lower than I was expecting for late fall. If my workouts are easier than I think they should be, I'll adjust accordingly.
