Got my 93 Cannondale out for the red bike pictures but had not ridden it in a long time. Saddle was way low but I put 10 miles on it. Bought this six years ago. This was a replacement frame for the sellers father. Had no wheels but set up as a Dura Ace down tube 7-8 speed. I had to clime up into a attic to get and it looked pretty much like new.

Beauty.
The stem looks like it is out past the minimum insertion line? Might want to check that.

Looks fine to me. Those markings are from previous positions its been in and ridden (mild flexing gradually wears off the anodizing). I've had this with a number of (used) stems I've bought. Some black market will tidy things up nicely.

Or he has way better eyes than us. But checking isn't a bad idea.

Or course, but I wasn't looking at the scratches, but how relatively high out of the frame that stem looks. Unless it something like a Nitto Tallux or Technomic....

Maybe I am too used to the "slam that stem" aesthetic.

I’ve been eyeing this bike on the local marketplace for a few months, finally bit the bullet with spring knocking at our door in Canada.

The group is a mix of ultegra/105/tiagra with bontrager race lite wheels.

Thanks! My other bikes have been 80s Japanese touring bikes so in comparison this one is on a different level.

I finally tensioned the rear wheel on my 83 ST. I haven’t ridden it in a long time due to the wheel and I am kicking myself now. I really had a great commute today, feels like a rocket, and so smooth! Honestly, this might be my best riding bike.

All of the 80’s ST Cannondales are marvelous riders.
My 88 gets more miles each year than any other bike in the stable.
They travel well, too.

Thanks to everyone in this thread I'm the new owner of a neglected but ridable '89 60cm I think SR400. Looks like it got pulled out of a dumpster but has a almost complete 105 group set but the triple crank set is depressing. On the plus side it shifts like butter even though the cables are rusted and I've gotta get some posts under my belt...

Bikes: Wow, where to start? A collection of 1980's and early 90's road, touring, and MTBs from the likes of Trek, Schwinn, Cannondale, Fuji, Miyata, Univega, Panasonic, and GT. It has gotten rather out of control.

A lot of them have the dotted serial number, and that can determine the year. Someone who knows the code can definitely help.

I usually go to the catalogs!

You talked me into buying a 1985 Cannondale ST 400 when it popped up on CL a few years back and I have been very happy with that bike. The bike came to me with all the original equipment. I rebuilt it with a triple and 700c wheels. I have taken it on a number of multi-day trips. Who knew that a 42 inch wheel base bike with 18 inch stays could ride this well? The braze-ons (rack, low rider, and 3 water bottle) are also a plus.

I know they are often a magnet for different opinions, but I always thought they really got the early tourers right the first go. Plus they had the one or two years of a hybrid (they are tough to find...I gave one away to a student) that were great riders.

Looks like a vinyl decal. May be able to heat and peel. I've removed them this way before but wasn't trying to save them.

Grabbed this pretty much all original 1987 SR400 today from the gentleman that built it when he was 17 at the bike shop. Will be a fun restore.

I’ve been riding this 88 Cannondale ST quite a bit for the past ten years but recently set it up with SOMA style front and rear racks.
10 speed indexed, downtube shifted, 28’s and a compact Sugino crank. A happy warrior!

Just about finished on my 8 speed friction ST 400, upright/touring/utility bike.

I have really been impressed with the way this bike rides and even with all of the racks and bags it still ”feels” light. I know it’s not!

Progress! The ‘88 frame has been built with a combination of used vintage, used modern, and new parts. (New Albion triple, Velo Orange bars/stem/sealed BB, Shimano Alivio T4000 3x9 and vbrake) I hope to get some trail time this weekend with the Bleuberry.

Got this used T700 a year ago to ride while visiting kids/grandkids in another state.I put 150 miles on it in a week’s time and love the bike.I changed the stem and put new bar tape on it. I think it’s a 94’ model with bar end shifters.Just my size, perfect fit. Didn’t even need to change the seat height. I gave $150 for it with zero regrets, well one regret, not bringing it home. It will be waiting for me on my next visit.
