Definitely a beautiful road. Have been up that way in a car, but not cycling. Reminiscent of the Tetons or Glacier.

Our storyline was quite different. Very cold morning. Because we camped at Colonial Creek we had no real warmup before the steepest part of the climb. Some of us did circuits through the campground to limber up the legs. Somewhere before Rainy Pass it started to rain. The rain turned to snow as we got higher. Fortunately, it was not sticking to the road. This was around Washington Pass.

It can be a challenge, at times. Snowking Mtn, Snowfield Peak, Forbidden Peak, Mt. Formidable, ... Got to love the mountains.

It was only the sixth day of the 93 day trip. We had a rest day in Winthrop the next day. I was the last one to reach the KOA. The owner sold $0.99 beers. Tasted divine after that day. No one wanted to shop and cook that night so we all went out for pizza. Someone made a cogent observation: It was the first time during the trip that we were sitting in chairs with backs, at least while eating.

Yeah. Everyone was a bit nervous. That was '99. Record snowfall in the area that winter. An environment like that was totally new to me. In Winthrop it was so dry people were watering lawns. There were tumbleweeds blowing around town the next day. I kept thinking "But yesterday, maybe 30 miles away, I was getting snowed on." You could look west towards the mountains and see clouds, like it was going to rain later, but they never moved any closer. Someone had to educate me about the rain shadow.
