Training Status??? (IV)

FTP test on the trainer last night. Up 11 watts from my last test 5 weeks ago. Still a long way to go to where I was last spring, but I'll take it. Today is sweet spot intervals.

I guess I'm gonna keep hammering out ftp **** since it is working and makes the trainer suck less. The traditional base approach seems super dumb right now. What am I gonna do, like 5 blocks of base for June racing? No ******g thank you.

3x12’ @ threshold. Outside in the glorious fresh air and sunshine (first day of my Xmas break). Wife and I are going skiing tomorrow— lots of restrictions due to CV, but looking forward to it. I bought us new equipment and a season pass as an anniversary gift this year.

Fiesta 20k TTT followed by 20 minutes of low tempo.
Interesting data: My wife wore her Giro aero head TT helmet versus her Specialized Evade.
Using Strava times, compared to last week where we both wore the same clothes and I wore my Giro Selector aero helmet, we were 20 seconds faster with her helmet compared to last weeks 20k TTT. Outdoor temperature was 61 F for the prior TTT versus yesterday of 59 F. Wind was about the same in speed and direction for both days.
Her average power was 2 watts less and my power was 2 watts more on the faster day. Bikes, wheels, setup, tires and tire pressure were all the same.

And another thing...Where are all the fast guys who used to ride Fiesta. We cannot be the fastest racers out there. That is stupid. Previously, we always saw at least a couple of fast men. Are they all on Zwift?

Or early! I've been out there three times on my TT bike in the last week and I've been home by 8:30 each time.

That is too early and cold for pretty boys and star boys like me. However, I want to see you new TT cockpit. My setup is getting long in the tooth and I am not feeling bad ass and super cool riding this setup.

Still working things out RE: the cockpit config.
Regarding the early AM: yes it has been way too cold. Typically stopping at the causeway dirt lot and taking off a vest and one or more other layer(s) before starting TT work. Times are not that impressive currently. But that'll improve, with the seasons of course

Did a ton of snowy mogul riding to celebrate the storm. Nice to be back on a board again but man my legs felt it!
Stoked for the winter all over again.

Pineapple express coming through Portland today, so its a day for a sweet spot workout on the trainier, and making a batch of kimchee. I haven't read the literature on this, but there is so much garlic and ginger in this recipe I'm pretty sure it makes you fast. #kimcheemakesyoufast

I'm officially down 10 lbs from Thanksgiving, though its funny math; I was 152 after a massive Thanksgiving Dinner, and 142 this morning. Realistically I'm probably down 6 lbs, which is still pretty good!

This morning my CTL is 40 pts higher than my low in mid-March. This will probably be my peak for the year. Going up to the lake for a few days to ski and then Xmas.

Training motivation disappeared long ago. I'm the opposite and CTL is 40+ lower now than in March. Hoping we can get racing by the time Golden State rolls around.

Doing Zwift TT Tune Up plan. Not much hours a week, but some intensity. First time in a while on any kind of structure.
I think I chose the ftp too low at first. I did the intro workout and it was way way too easy. I assumed Zwift ftp was for "hour" and my hour power from my 25mi ride was 252. So I put in 260. Way too easy. I upped it to 280 which is 5w under my 20min PR on the TT bike and that seemed to actually work out perfect. Z2 power and HR is right on the money, same for Z4 efforts.....etc...
2021 I really want to get 300w out of myself for a 10mi TT.
The plan looks solid, I just question the weeks 4/5/6 VO2 workout. It has me doing 420w for 2min, then 380, then 360, then 340. Uhmmmm, yeah. In what world can I do that on 280w worth of ftp while in aero? I'll have to modify that workout down on power a lot! Rest of the workouts look just right for progression.
I'm a bit disappointed in my teammates that bought TT bikes. They seem to ride them maybe twice a month now. I'd have just bought clip ons if I were to do that. You can't really adapt to the position at all just riding it 2x a month. It's kind of my thing, but I now split it at least 50/50 with the road bike volume wise. I guess if you've got the money. One of them bought a brand new Slice and then 808 and zipp disc. The other I think got a pretty darn new P3. I've got more money in my skinsuit and helmet than I do my frameset.
Lame, but I still wish I was faster on Zwift on the TT bike. I'm light years faster on it IRL.

18.5 hrs last week. Used some PTO to make it happen. Now I'm tired and my legs hurt. But in a good way Taking it easy this week.
Not sure what January will bring. VoS was cancelled in February which is no surprise.
A few weeks ago I had planned on scaling back the hours a bit, but ended up just trudging through, force of habit I suppose. Maybe I'll drop the hours a little and do some more intervals.

Finished week 1 of SSB2 HV, yesterday was a bit of a slog of 7x10 between 88-94%, which is generally pretty easy for me, but I did this at 3pm when I usually do stuff in the morning and had done some very light snowshoeing (first time) around noon so maybe I had some built up fatigue. Otherwise, solid workouts
Version 7.0
4 sessions, 7.5 hours, 122 miles 347 TSS. Two of the sessions were Fiesta 20K TTTs.
My wife and I have the Garmin 830 and at the end of the session, the Garmin goes through past metrics and calculates a bunch of stuff that it displays. It provides a one word summary of the workout such as peaking, unproductive, maintaining, productive.
After the TTT which is for all intents and purposes an over / under threshold builder and followed by 20 minutes of tempo, we get “unproductive”.
Sunday, after a 2 hour ride 130 TSS we both get a “maintaining”. My wife announces hers and asks me what I got, I said, you are not going to believe this but it says “Awesome”. She comes over to look and sees the maintaining and provides me with a term of endearment that cannot be written on BF.
I have no idea whether other applications such as Zwift, Peloton and others provide training plans and analysis that are any good or not. The Garmin stuff is total BS but good for laughs at the end of the ride.

I have 2 weeks off, and I thought about riding outside, but our hospital is inundated with COVID. Then again, Ted on Facebook says I shouldn't be a sheep and live my life in fear.
Statistically, I have only needed 3 emergency visits in 15 years of riding. That is roughly 3000 rides, so .01 percent chance. I really don't mind riding inside, so I'll probably do that. Going to be lots o volume!

65 TSS an hour isn't slouching at all. That's pretty much nonstop tempo or low end sweetspot, right? Maybe I'm off.
Usually my true Z2 rides are about 50 TSS per hour. So, 65 per hour for me would be on into Z3.

Closing in on 7,000 miles for the year. I've done more miles this year than in both 2018 and 2019 (stopped riding in August of both of those years), and I didn't even start riding until March. CTL even hit 100 a few months ago, though is hovering around 80ish at this point. Covid fitness. Such an odd year.
Since my state is apparently the worst in the nation/world (!) for transmission, I'll be working from home for the forseeable future, so extra time to get in a few more hours during the week.
10,000 mile goal for 2021... and possibly no races to use the fitness in! Should be a good base for 2022 I guess?

Today we did a 20k TTT and we logged the exact same time according to Strava as last week. We followed it up with 25 minutes of low tempo and I got a productive and my wife got maintaining from the Garmin. Go figure.
