I find that I just need to do a few training hikes in the ~1-2 hr duration to re-kindle the musculature, and then I can hike/backpack all day, due to the cycling fitness. I grew up backpacking and mountaineering with my dad and the local scout troop. I still try to find time to go on a major trip 1-2x/year.
In regards to the "runners high", swimming has always done it best for me. I think that having your head mostly underwater for 10+ laps really contributes to the head change. After 10 laps of freestyle I'm usually like:
I swim like 1-2x/month, at most

As a runner you probably already know this but what you describe is a perfect storm for injury.
The heart gets fit fast, yours already is from riding. Ligaments and tendons take a long time to get strong however, sometimes as much as 2 years. Aerobically you want to run but the joints can't take it. Don't increase your mileage too much at once.
There are a lot of opinions out there including not increasing more than 10% per week. The point is not to do something silly like one day decide to run 10 miles when the furthest you have ever run is five. Listen to your calves.
Nothing in the world like a runner's high. The closest I have ever come to it without running is on the fixed gear bike.

right now only able to run once a week and my calves definitely let me know when its time to pack it in or when i can go again. like i said i want to run for 20 miles but my body wont allow it
runners high is definitely real though, i used to call it the floating head syndrome because my body just went on autopilot and i was just a brain bobbing up and down in space

day 3: ive realized that being active and "working out" is my drug, its all i can think about and all i want to do. i cant figure out what to do with myself, ive read 4 books in 3 days and putting netflix on just annoys me. i wish the ocean was clean here so i could go swim in it and pass out on the beach

I plan on leaving this area in the future because the winters are dark and too long. I get pretty heavy depression when it's dark and cloudy for a few weeks straight. I eat vitamin D and all that, but nothing works. First time the sun comes out and it feels like a massive shot of dope, and everything feels "right" again.

Thinking about a new MTB. Posted a thread, but got no responses. The weird thing is that a thread about looking for a $200 FS MTB will usually get tons of responses, but looking at an SWorks gets zero.
My SS MTB takes care of most of my local riding with ease, and for my local riding it overlaps with my Epic (but lighter, more nimble, and better fork).
My Epic beat the hell out of me on the Whistler trails, just too many rocks. I am thinking about the Sworks Stumpy (I can even ride mellow DH with it).
I know there are some MTBers here. Any thoughts? By the way, my shop has offered me an amazing deal on a NOS bike, which helps. And, I am only looking at Spesh, because my local shop takes such good care of me.

@Kindaslow - stumpy is a kickass bike, despite the way people hate on S they make great bikes and stump is no exception. bunch of local racers (good ones) ride them
im trying to figure out what i can do for work in a new place then ill think about where i can go. i have no interest in continuing to work with computers inside all day, its not rewarding in the least. unfortunately thats the best chance i have to find a job in this day and age
california and AZ have been my two favorite places that ive been, and id jump at the opportunity to relocate to either
i get S.A.D. too but to be honest its not even the weather here, its the people that suck most. when i travel im greeted with smiles and waves and genuine hospitality, here everyone has to be a prick because thats what everyone else is doing.
not to mention the wild is just too far away and i need regular easy access to the real world
I think you should relocate to an area where you can be outside all year, for your emotional well being. I'm serious. That stuff matters. Somewhere like AZ, Ca, UT, etc.

I would recommend my area just outside of Seattle, but folks with SAD do not like it here. There are a lot of nice folks and amazing riding and hiking, though!

I'm actually back in the bay area for the 4th of july.
I rode the interconnected palomares, nile, and dublin canyon route. It was the palomares route where the leap frogging happened and the second half where they "disappeared".

yeah buddy, oldschool
i cringe at the thought of having to remove these veloplugs
i thought about this, but then i would need an equally weird saddle and that wont be easy to come by

Also seriously **** this stupid yellow gradient.
Today (the other day) I ate **** in the white mountains half way through a ride, luckily the bike was OK, and I wasn't too badly hurt so I finished the loop. I've got a nice size bruise tho taking up a good portion of my leg. Front end went out from under me around a wet turn, not a good time FYI.

Rode the bike park at Whistler today and it was an amazing experience. Fun and very intense. The blue run here are like some black diamond runs in other places, and the black diamond runs here are not for me!

Just a few minutes down from the top of the gondola, my guide, another guy, and I had to provide stabilizing first aid to someone who had crashed badly, until the pros got there. I have not done true emergency level first aid in a while, but luckily the three of us each remembered important parts and worked together until the pros got there. And, it is chilly up near the top!
The guy was not wearing a DH helmet and his helmet, a road like helmet, was crushed and destroyed.
