New wheels and tires are awesome. Ride smooth and roll fast.
crashed again this morning. Landed on the same wrist as last time, and now my opposite elbow is all banged up. Bike seems ok, Wheels are straight no bent spokes. My tape which was already on the way out is shredded on the left side, and my left shifter won’t win in beauty contest.
I was on the cap trail, (mup) and these three mouth breathers were walking towards me side by side. They saw me coming but made no attempt to make room for me. I went around them on the edge of the mup and of course this one spot had mud. Went down hard. *******s were polite enough to tell me I must have hit ice, and they kept walking.
Anywho looks like I am wrapping bars today, First time for everything so if anybody has any tricks or trade secrets let me know.
Manager at my LBS swears by ESI tape, I don’t know if anyone carries that in my area. I really like the tape on my wife’s bike but I can’t figure out what it is, and it’s not the tape listed on the trek website. The gripytac looks cool, but the texture feels rough?
Hope y’all have a great Monday.

Ugh. Bummer.
Grippytack is awesome. Not rough - grippy with just the right amount of cush.
IIRC, the new Domane come with Bontrager tape with 'Endurance,' or something along those lines, in the name. **Edit: actually, I think that it's this Perf Tape - https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/e...pe-set/p/28485 **

I looked her bike up on the inter webs to see what components it came with. The tape that it says it’s suppose to come with, didn’t match what’s on her bike. Maybe they ran out and threw something else on? Not that big of a deal. I was the thinking about the black and white grippy tac. It’s mostly black so I figured the white getting dirty wouldn’t be noticeable? This feels like a trap.

I just made some dough for the pizza tonight and I thought of a groaner worthy of datlas -
Why are massages so great? Because it feels nice to be kneaded.
I'll see myself to the door.

They sound different for sure, unfortunately all I mostly heart was my front rotor kissing lol. I had a hat and thermal face covering on so I couldn’t hear much of anything.

Next time I am not going to be nice and go out of my way. I’ll just hold my line and shout move. With that being said, I think if I hit someone my bike will have more damage than what I just experienced.
Will let you know the results in a few weeks.

Im going get a head start tonight, but I am sure by thursday, I won’t be that much farther ahead than you. It would also be a great time to let me know how wrong I am, naturally requiring me to start over.

A pic of my bars. You can make out the tape a bit on the drops. Is somewhat tacky, has some cush, and doesn't feel rough.

I have a coworker that owns a high-end Raleigh from the 80s.
In describing it to me he was saying how it has this really neat feature in that the headset has a centering divot so that if you're leaning it against something the front wheel is resistant to turning and the bike falling over. I've asked him if he was sure the headset is supposed to do that and he was quite confident.
The guy is our senior mechanical engineer
Personally, IDGAF about headsets. So long as my headset is reasonably smooth and has no play it's good enough for me.

It’s interesting for me to hear all of these crappy things that happen on MUPs. There’s a short section of the Zim Smith MUP that I normally hit here as a quick cut through to avoid a couple of roads and I have never once had an issue. People are polite and move well out of the way.

I do think I will ask a LBS to help me with the rebuild of the Habanero when I get a new groupset in 1-2 years, and by then the bike will be 12+ years old with >60K miles on original headset, so I will ask them to at least eyeball the headset to see if it needs any maintenance or to be changed.

I was talking to some of my cycling friends about my recent experience with a worn front chainring and we were discussing other components that are often ignored and/or neglected.
The subject of headsets and headset bearings came up. I will honestly say that I have totally ignored mine for 12 years, I do check that the front wheel turns freely without binding and that there is no "play" in the headset, but I have not done anything more.
Some of the guys say that is crazy talk, and that I should be at a minimum re-greasing headset bearings annually.
Comments? Time to start a thread on Headset maintenance??
