Can we add back and front fenders to FS models easily, or do we need to tinker?

A front fender is easy. On the rear you will need to tinker. FYI there are braze ons for a rack...if you install a rack with rackpack a fender is not necessary.

Thanks

I got my Big Apple 2.0 and tried to put it on my 8H over the weekend. First I tried the front. I didn't want to use it there (yet), but I wanted to see if it fit.

There's plenty of clearance in the fork. The fender clearance is pretty tight and possibly a little too narrow. I think the fender could be made to work if you replaced the stays with something that would let you move the fender a little bit further back. But probably the best solution is a slightly wider set of fenders.

Then I moved it to the back. Fits fine in the back. Fender clearance is fine, but fender coverage may not be as complete as everyone might want. I took a few photos, but I don't know how well they show the clearances.

https://goo.gl/photos/r6Yc3cMM98rvkyVj7

But I found what I wanted to know. I think that I will get a 2.15 Big Apple, put that in the rear (there is still room to spare), put the 2.0 in the front, and get some different fenders. I do need to double check that the brake arms are clearing the tire, although if that were a problem, it likely would have made itself known on the ride to work this morning.

I also moved the 1.75 tire off the rear and on to the front. No issues that I've noticed.

You may also need to check the rear mech clears the rear tyre.

The 8H is IGH, so there's no derailleur issues. Now, on my Dahon Speed P8, the derailleur hits the rear wheel in the lowest gear. I need a new, better rear derailleur. I wish it was an IGH,...

We have just launched an Indiegogo campaign for kids bikes and 11sp belt drive bikes with gates belt drives. Any thoughts? The campaign is at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/w...e/x/13318697#/ .

Thanks,
Yan

Looks great. If I hadn't just got my 8H, I'd have to seriously consider the 11. Good luck.

Looking fantastic!

Now, any word on the fat bike behind you in the new videos you posted on YouTube?

The Fat wheel model is awesome, the seat tube is behind the BB with a low toptube to make it a one size fits most. However it is expensive to make and prohibitively expensive to ship, I can not do standard retail with it. I would only do a crowd funding campaign. Let's see how this one goes and that may be next. FYI I have a cool 24" folder and a 20" folder with 18 speeds and time trial bars on the way.

Thanks,
Yan

A 24" folder is nice, but it can't tackle the back roads and sand I ride through in my area. I shall wait patiently until the (hopeful) Downtube fatbike campaign.

Yan -- I have a 9FS that had some rusining on the fold locking mechanism -- is there anyway I can purchase just the locking mechanism?

We need to strip frames to get hinges, hence we sell them for $50

Thanks,

Since the Indiegogo campaign is doing about as poorly as possible...$0 I added the Fat bike to the campaign.

Hopefully I can get more than $1!!!

Thanks,
Yan

So, $499 plus S&H. How much would the S&H be? If the campaign doesn't come off successfully, does the person get a refund?

Also, how about a nice, convincing YouTube video to inspire me,...

tds the shipping cost is defined on the site. I recall it is just under $50.

@ j_bravo historically most customers use 1.9's

I recall Rob_E put 2.1's on his 8H, he had fender clearance issues. He posted it somewhere on this forum.

Thanks,
Yan

I'm running a 2.0 in the rear, and a 1.75 (I think, whatever came on rear) in front. Works fine. Fender clearance was only an issue in the front. I wouldn't mind going 2.15, but I think I'd change the fenders first. The frame seems to have plenty of clearance.

I don't know about the rim width. On the one hand, it does seem like 2.0 and up might be a stretch for a normal rim, but it looks pretty solid to me. That said, I plan on building a different wheelset at some point because I'd like a dynamo up front and maybe a coaster brake in the rear. If I do that, I'll get some wider rims, just to be on the safe side.

I wanted to announce a few changes at the Downtube. I am moving to Hawaii in 4 days, it is a lifelong dream to live and teach in Hawaii, and my dream is near.

Some people know that I handle all orders/phone calls/ and I even ship NC bikes. This will all change, but I think it will be a positive long term shift.

I have made some changes to the site today, and I will add some products in the coming days.

Thanks to everyone for the positive energy!!!
Yan

I hope this bike is available in 2017, because I'm on it if it is.
