Timing is everything. Today I rode along part of the final stage of the ToC (back in May), a 5 mile stretch leading up to the Rock Store climb. Leading up to and on the day of the race, the road surface was about as bad as it gets with a rough surface and plenty of heat/stress cracks. To my surprise and delight, that 5 mile stretch has recently been repaved with a nice smooth asphalt composite. The before and after experience is like night and day.

My team mate Bernie got away in a 12 man (approx) break in Prospect Park, towed them around for several laps (it was an awesome display of VO2 mojo to behold) and had sufficient snot to hold on for 2nd after all that. That guy is truly the Human Lung. This in a race that was so consistently fast that it was essentially strung out for 30+ miles, I would estimate at least 30 of the original 100+ rider field (35+ and women combined) got shelled, including yours truly. 28-30 mph every time I looked at the speedo, 22 mph up the 5% upgrade on the backside of the course.

First race back in about six weeks. I guess everybody's in shape except me. Oh well. Back to the drawing board.

Skipped the club ride yesterday and went for a 4 hour mtb ride with some old friends. Found out this morning that there was a crash on the club ride and a friend got 4 broken ribs and a punctured lung. He's a geezer like me but has been a top pro, U.S. national team, two-time Olympian, etc. I hate to hear that stuff, I hope he's going to be o.k.

reminds me of a story my mom told me about "pete" and "tony". She was young and someone gave them pet ducks. Grampa Ilija had to give them away, later their Slovak neighbors came by to thank them for the meat, "oh, boy! they were sooooo good." All this on the north side of Chicago.

not the same kind of tragedy but you may want to remind the fellas who took the chicks home, in case they have any kids.

Made the break but with w hill each lap I couldn't hang as it got established. Went back to the chase and caught the break with two to go. With only a mile of real estate left I had to be happy with finishing.

You truly are inspirational. Racing better while still half broken than most can while in tip top shape.

If one wants to do a low tempo flat ride one shouldn't go out with a Pro MTB/cat 1 road racer. 3.5 hours in windy hot humid weather. I have to say my form has somewhat snapped back.

Good to hear your form is coming back. Do you have some target races coming up?

You Europeans have to embrace the petroleum based surfaces. Really how do you expect to join the global economy if you can't pay homage to the oil conglomerates.

as you well know, i'm just a guest worker.

that said, i have to deal with the same infrastructure as my hosts - including loose bricks that tend to bounce/jump up +/- 10cm when you ride over them.

they like to keep things interesting on their courses.
