I had a similar trial by fire back in the 80s, week-long stays in Boston for months on a special project. The miles paid for a trip to Maui for us.
The other perk I remember was regularly bringing home lobster for dinner back when lobster was significantly cheaper in Boston than in NY.

That's the thing that I can't quite put a finger on. I probably work a bit harder on the Schwinn, but I think that might be because the Trek doesn't feel like it rewards me for pushing it harder.
So I guess that might be what I'm trying to figure out.
I haven't done any gravel riding on any of my bikes, the immediately local stuff seems to be getting paved over, and the stuff out West of here is beyond what any of my road bikes can handle.

Lighter bikes certainly feel more responsive to thrashing, so that could be a big part of it. I've also mentioned this many times in the various "rotating weight doesn't matter!!!" threads, but tire/wheel weight does matter a *lot* when it comes to handling and feel (though not necessarily with regard to speed, particularly for solo endeavors). So yeah, a feedback loop could certainly explain the speed differences.
Fast bikes are fast.
I've trained on the old Puch before, just to see. Same power, I was slow, but I was comfortable. Sitting up is much more comfortable, in a relative sense, because I'm not uncomfortable on my newer bikes, but I am ridiculously faster.

Sometimes I feel that the Trek is telling me "I'm a touring bike, you idiot. Put a triple and bar-ends on me and stop worrying about going fast."

I take my kids to the Maritime Museum in Newport News pretty much every year, and they have the boat from that come-from-behind America's Cup victory on display there. I've looked at it... but I should prolly really look at it next time.

Try coasting downhill and see if one is faster. I can coast faster on the Gunnar than the Seven because it is lower at the BB, has a lower position, and has deep drop bars.

I think the Trek is a bit faster downhill. I've hit around 40-45 on both bikes but I have to pedal for that on the Schwinn. Trek is most definitely lower, by a lot. I have to keep pedal strike in mind.
