This week's club ride could be summarized as "fun southbound, hard northbound, and the cleaned orange wheels are delightfully silent." But no pictures.

I did find a picture from just after sunrise from last week's ride on the almost-40-year-old Rans recumbent, so I'll post that instead.

For a time, Veloce 10-speed brifters were around $100 with a set of housing/cables from various UK online sellers. I stocked up! The Shimano 8-speed stuff remains plentiful.

The other kids at school may not get it, but that is a sweet ride and Thomas is probably coolest kid in school rolling in on that bike and a Cino jersey. My kid rides to school on a low end Trek MTB.

Got out for a quick 16 mile, 1600 feet climbing around town before the rain came today. I rode up to Ragged Mountain Reservoir, passing a small cow pasture. I’ve seen the feeder but don’t recall ever seeing the cows before. I thought I was still inside Charlottesville city limits, but a look at the map when back home shows we’re just out in the County. Still, only about 1.5 miles from UVA Grounds and 3-4 miles from my house in the middle of town.



Took Rosie the doggie out for some fun at Foxhaven Farm after getting back home. This was right along my bike route today, not far from the cows. She loved it!

1989Pre 

51.25 miles on the Manufrance today in full-sun, 82F when I left, 80F when I returned. Brunswick to Damariscotta and back.
Otherwise beautiful ride, but the road re-surfacing at Newcastle, Edgecomb and Damariscotta on Rt. 1 was horrendous. 2"-deep grooves, 1 foot wide, were cut in the breakdown/bike lane every hundred feet or-so, in this section. Just when I thought I was past them, I'd hit another. Co-incidentally, it was my first ride with Gripfast track "wing" nuts in the rear. They handled miles of this abuse like a champ. I really had no idea how they were going to react to even normal chain pressure. The clobbering my bike took didn't phase the Wolber rims much, either (I tried to brake when I saw an up-coming groove), but my lower bottle cage needed correction when I got to my turn-around point.

Nice weather today took a easy ride up to Alma on the bike trail and did some riding on the back roads on the SS Nishiki.

Dry and cool continues - wool jersey weather. Only a couple of hours pedaling the roads

edit: New Specialized Turbo Cotton folding clinchers w Vittoria latex tubes. Love 'em for supple when at high pressure = 105 F, 110psi R. I accept that they will probably wear faster than some others. Measure 25.7mm mounted on Campy Proton rim (130mm hub), so not new or wide, but not vintage skinny rims.

Thanks Spaghetti Legs. Yeah, the kids that have seen him on it just think it's some old bike. It's probably older than half of the teachers at his high school.

Fwiw, last year in eighth grade, the custodian saw him ride in to school a couple of times. He insisted that Thomas park it in the supply room for security. I thought that was a great gesture.

Jacket and long pants today. Delivered a couple of bikes to friends and was rewarded with a coffee ride. Trip through San Leandro, Oakland over the High st bridge to Feel Good Bakery.

To be fair, I did find a few more today. The morning light was kinder to them than it has been in the evenings. But still, I am rather appalled at the lack of Art in our lives here in the city that used to be known as "Pigs Eye, Minnesota".

And of course, there were other distractions... Such as this fresh crime scene which I would call "Death of a Bicycle":



Exactly as I found it, I felt like seeing if I could find some yellow tape to surround it with. I was laughed at as I played forensic investigator there on the sidewalk, next to the Holiday gas station, with my Leica and a very serious demeanor. There was a splattered-open pizza box on the ground nearby, a Clue perhaps? Two slices were still intact. Someone get a DNA sample, quick!

Or not.

While I was mentally processing all this, I found myself down along the river. You have seen this before, I'm sure. Same spot, different bike. The 650b conversion lowers the pedals so that I don't have to use the boat cleats for support.



But what's this? A mural!

I've nothing to say about them; don't know the context nor the purpose, if there was one. But they are here, if you look hard enough. And that concludes my mural quest for now. We have them, sure, but other places have them better.

Closing out May with a 60-miler up the North Shore. Weather was great, but a wind off the lake made things chilly at points.

Tennis courts have completely disappeared - looks like more fun than tennis, but not as exciting as ping-pong. The next olympic sport?



To my delight, they reinstalled the water fountain at North Park. It was gone during “Covad”. The new one has a nice bottle-filler option!



Jet contrails formed a giant “X” in the sky. It was visible for hours.

Finally feel like I’m getting some fitness back. Didn’t start riding until mid-April this year, but now I’m just over 400 miles YTD.

Yesterday I got in an early ride starting at 7 AM to the Arbor Hills Nature Preserve in Plano, TX for 30 miles on my Rivendell Sam Hillborne.

Today I got in another 34 around the central Dallas area on my Austro Daimler Vent Noir II but didn't snap any pics.

Very nice Memorial day ride today. Great weather first day with no wind rain or snow and good air quality for the first time in what seems like year. Road the bike trail up to Alma and road around some on the roads trails there went up to the Skull tree trails for the first time since last Summer. Things are starting to get green but still no wild flowers odd for this late in the season

On Thursday evening I joined a group organized by Utility Bicycles in Kingston for two dozen miles, mostly on-trail. It’s the first time I rode a trail at night and I enjoyed it. Everyone had good lights so I never felt like visibility was a problem. Suffice to say both me and my Mk I were the oldest specimens present.

Today was 49 miles on the Mercian expanding my routes north from Woodstock. I rode north to Kiskatom and followed beautiful roads along Kaaterskill Creek down through High Falls back to Blue Mountain and Zena before swinging back north to Woodstock.

it was around 80F and the sun was golden. Not a cloud to be seen.

When I was a kid, our family traveled through The Adirondacks on our way home from Canada. I dipped my feet in a mountain stream just like this and it was one of the most refreshing things I’ve experienced.

62 mile ride today on my 1980 Raleigh Record Ace. I built the bike up a week or two ago as a long distance machine with 3 x 6 gearing. It is a very fine machine for long rides. The wheels, headset, and brakes are original. The rest of the parts are more or less period correct (or in keeping with the age of the bike). Central Iowa has a first class system of bike paths.

Pulled the Harding Holdsworth from the ‘winter’ trainer, got a better wheelset, made a few adjustments and was ready to ride. But having a couple of tools at hand, got the AD on the road with a new brake cable.

Harding got the longer ride, first time on the road with a Planet X Holdsworth branded crankset 48/34 and the new ‘narrow experiment’ Soma Brevet handlebars, 34 at th hoods, 40cm ctc drops. Need to lower stem from winter position.
Trailhead for hiking = Warning. Sad sign of the times.

The Farm .... is bare. Not a sign of anything but the usual.

Smaller chain rings, shorter cranks, nice wheels make it pretty good at climbing
