So my dad has an old Trek 1000 from the 1990's (aluminum frame, down-tube indexed 7 speed shifters) that is functional as he probably only put a few hundred miles on it BITD.
He has not ridden the bike in 20+ years (he had an unfortunate collision with a clueless runner on a MUP in the DC/Alexandria area and broke his pelvis and never really used the bike again).
He bought a budget wind-trainer and asked me to set up the bike for that, which I did during our visit yesterday. At his age (88) I think it's reasonable to try the stationary bike but I am also concerned with his arthritis that he may have a tough time mounting/dismounting even if he uses a foot-stool.
The interesting story is that my mom has a Physical Therapist who comes to the home who she describes as a "former professional cyclist" and also someone who worked at a bike shop for many years....and when he saw my dad's old bike he said "oh, that's a classic. It's probably worth A LOT of money! At least a thousand dollars!!"
I bit my tongue but honestly a 25+ year old Trek 1000 even in NOS condition (which this is not, but close) is not worth a thou....maybe $400 on a good day.

I’d been sick all week last week and spent the week resting rather than riding. I thought I was better on Saturday and went out to do a 55 mile gravel ride. It was pretty windy, 15ish or so MPH up in the hills but the weather was warm (38 or so)
Between the wind and the softness of the road, I was completely shot after 45 miles at a relatively pedestrian pace of 14.5. All of the climbing was packed into the middle 3rd of the ride and all of it was on soft dirt roads. I ended up stopping at a Stewart’s 8 miles from home with about 500 feet of climbing left and called my wife for a pickup. I could have made it, but just wasn’t in the mood and didn’t feel great. I’m still not 100% sold on the challenge tires, they’re a little squirrelly on wet pavement.
On Sunday I drove down to meet a group I rode with when the chance allows. I don’t join them a lot because it’s usually a 30 minute drive to get to the start. It was 20 degrees when we started with a pretty brisk wind. We started pretty slow for the first two miles. At mile 5 we started going up- 1000 feet in three miles. I was trying to limit my effort so I wouldn’t sweat because I knew at the top there was going to be a ton of wind but it didn’t work. I still managed to stay pretty warm and it was a great ride. We did 3300 feet in 42 miles. The views were amazing.

I've begun searching flights for my (hopefully) last trip to the USA. Dread all around. I have to see if I can get past that. My wife had a good suggestion that, instead of my usual two week stay, I cut it to one.

My 20 mile ride yesterday on a fairly flat MUP with no wind averaged 13 
Serendipitously ended up riding with a guy I had met at the shop a while ago who is still recovering from a pretty serious bike accident so we just took it easy and chatted.
It was nice.

Yesterday for the start in the 20s I had- thermal, Jersey and jacket. Smart Wool neck gaitor, hat, gloves, thermal tights, wool socks, foot warmers and overshoes.
Saturday at 38 I was overdressed in jersey, jacket, regular non thermal bibs w/ leg warmers and shoe covers.
