It breaks my heart (Portland OR)

Once again I took the pup for a run along the waterfront and there was a home-displaced man (hey, not trying to piss off the homeless, they have lawyers and PR people here in Portland) riding a bike that was clearly not his. Wrong shoes, handlebars loosened and tilted 90 degrees off. MASI frame.

You can't call in a crime if you aren't the victim, and last thing I need is to be a KAREN.

Besides, maybe it was his best friend's who died of COVID.

Sigh

Why not offer to buy it? for a reasonable price considering condition.

I actively avoid driving past a couple of the bad encampments with huge bike piles for fear I might recognize some of mine. I think it's going to keep getting worse before it improves.

A homeless thief is a pitiful thief, if you consider the possibilities.

Consider Bernie Madoff. I figure Bernie alone stole more than all bicycle thieves (homed or not) in history. In a day.

He got away with it for a long time, because his pedals matched his shoes, so to speak.

The smelly thieves are more personally offensive, for some reason. Weird.

I rode all over Portland and saw plenty of homeless encampments. No one tried to take me or Sarah's stuff and no one was threatening. It was a truly fabulous experience. Love to do it again!

People get what they are willing to put up with. Just saying. From government or fellow citizens, alike. Sounds like Woke whining. Sounds like Portland needs some "Classic and Vintage" values to me.

We'll, you totally *could* solve Portlands house affordability problem. Just quit allowing banks to approve home loans &/or put a 200% capitol gains tax on all home sale profits.

Easy. No home sales & prices are frozen.

Wheres my Nobel?

You see, the thing is, is that we like unregulated free-market capitalism & that's that. Quit blaming the coast for being the dumping grounds for the fly-over states misguided economic policies.

Reality is: Masi-dude would rather be homeless in Portland with it's resources, money, opportunity, & potential for connectedness & chance for social mobility than be isolated in a place with a cheap house, lots of land obligation, high transportation cost & a dead end, no-pay, hopeless job at a grain silo. He's broke with no money either way. At least, to him, Portland offers an up-side. Else, he'd be elsewhere.

Yep. Masi dude is a sad sorry sack. What does that say about where he moved from?

Again, how is this c&v? It's not.
The worlds problems will not be solved today.
Start caring about your neighbor.
Relationships change lives.

I can't believe I'm defending our garbage people, but jeez dude? The disgust is misplaced. Try kindness instead.

If this thread is REALLY about the bike, next time just offer to buy it instead. Suck it up & save us the melty snowflake fable of sadness. Pull yourself up by the bootstraps & take action to make your community great (again.)

BTW: I B T L

You should see me riding to a Volunteer Trail Stewards workday! None-too-clean boots, chewed up and stained jeans, and a trashed, stained t-shirt, riding an old bike.

I'm not kidding. I hadn't noticed the thread you mentioned. From your description, it doesn't sound like C&V is the proper home, but on the other hand, it isn't a topic that's likely to devolve into a political discussion. This thread absolutely is (and to an extent already has).

Years ago, I was a moderator on this site, and this would have gotten moved in a heartbeat. If I had to guess, c400bill must be busy, or on vacation. Also a guess, this thread may have originated in another sub-forum and got moved here.

DA 7700 is too young for me to be considered classics or vintage, maybe in 15-20 years more when all is disc and wireless shifting.

waiting for the UCI to go after a team hacking a competing sprinter's bike and shifting it into the small ring 200 meters before the line

My Portland commute took me across this brand new bicycle/pedestrian bridge yesterday. This city has been doing a great job of making itself more accessible to people who walk and ride bikes. Guess what population walks and rides bikes the most? If that means the guy driving to work in a giant pickup gets sick of looking at tents and decides to move out of Portland, that would be wonderful. Of course, the guy commuting in the giant pickup will only have to drive farther to work here every day, because this is where the jobs are. Shucks.

Here in Ventura there are areas that are worse than others. Local knowledge is key. I ride the " path of least resistance" , I'm pretty sure most urban areas have one! I do not ride my bike to try to solve world problems , quite the opposite .
