I pack a spare for an overnight tour...I am twice as likely to use it. I am usually with my wife and we both roll with 26" Marathon Supremes. It makes better sense when one of your 4 tires could fail.

Unloaded riding I carry no spare.

We've had good luck with the Supremes...probably both have at least a couple thousand miles on them and one flat, a big staple in mine.

No sympathy for those suffering from a form of mental illness, huh?

When I carry a spare, I use the lightest and most compact folding tire that will handle the condition that I'll be riding through. I have used my spare tires twice on extended tours.

28 and 32 mm spares.

A ruined 28 mm tire looking for the looking for the trash bin.

1- Do you pack a spare tire with you on your Bike Touring Trips???
2- Why do you pack a Spare Tire with you???
3- Why do you not pack a Spare Tire with you???
4- What tires are you using on your Bike and What is the maker of your Spare Tire???

1- I don’t carry a “spare” tire on tour but I usually have two tires rolled up in the bottom of a pannier while touring. I’m sure in a bind they could be used as spares and get me to the next bike shop.

2 & 3- I don’t have any need to carry a spare tire because I already have two tires in my pannier. Also I almost always start a tour with new tires on the rims.

4- I select tires based on the expected riding condition, so they change from tour to tour. The current four tire lineup consists of a 28-622 Continental 4-Season slick (front), 32-622 Continental Hardshell slick (rear) and two 42-622 Continental AT Ride gravel knobbies. I hate to come to an interesting dirt road or trail and not have tires to ride it. Like wise I really don’t like pushing heavier tires than nessesary on sealed road.

Am I making any sense? It’s basically how I’ve tour for quite a few years now, so I pretty set in my ways.

I have a Panaracer Pasela TG that I bought just for carrying as a spare.
It is so flexible that it not only folds, but you can roll it up into a package the size of a baseball.

Just going to run on 2" Mondials and take a couple of Rema Tiptop Tyre patches, they'll fix a pretty big cut well enough to get somewhere that has a new tyre. If the tour next month was in a third world country I'd take a spare.

I did way back in the day of steel racing bikes, iron knees and cotton tires. Two teens rode from Canada to Mexico along the Pacific Coast with 3 spare sew-ups each. When we reached Crescent City we called home for another 4 tubulars and more glue.
