I saw where Zwift sells a unit for $500. Are there other options that still simulate hills, etc.? Wahoo?

nice ride/outing with the older kiddo today. she did pretty well, although i think the idea of riding hard enough that you get tired/out of breath is/was somewhat foreign to her. every time she fell behind and i'd slow down to ask her if everything was ok and if she could stay a little closer she could carry on a conversation like she was sitting on the couch reading. still, almost 40 miles for a 12 year old, three or four small (300') climbs, i think she did good. the new-ish train through marin and sonoma is nice. bike hooks for hanging and wall space with bungees. thirty minute headways or so on the return trip, pretty good for a partially single-tracked line through sparsely populated lands. i won mini golf, she won everything else including yatzhee and go-karts

Yes you need a “smart” trainer, mine is Wahoo KICKR Snap which is a little cheaper than the Zwift branded trainer, along with my laptop. It works fine but cheaper trainers like mine are going to be the “wheels on” variety.

I really want to be sympathetic to the homeless people, but it gets really hard when they try to assert ownership of the public paths.

A great ride this morning. Back on the open highway shoulder. Early enough in the day, shade is not an issue. I felt so good today that, had I not known how hot it would be in an hour, I would have been tempted to do a third loop. Every time I use ‘loop’, the term ‘office park’ comes to mind, so I think I’ll just call it the office park loop. RWGPS tells me I’ve ridden three days in a row.

I could easily be wrong; I posted the weights of these way back along with the weight of the two-piece Madone bars, and my own Bontrager stem/Easton carbon bars. It’s been awhile, but the two-piece Madone bars were the heaviest of the three setups.

I have a Wahoo Kickr Snap, which is a wheel-on Smart trainer like the Zwift Hub. It's about 500 new, but you can get them for $2-300 on Craigs List or FB Marketplace.

Im not worried about it. Wouldn’t have even weighed it if you hadn’t asked. I don’t really weigh stuff other than the complete bike, and then just for grins.

I rarely weigh individual parts, either, but the Madone bars were loaners on my wife’s Émonda while eating for the one piece bars. When they swapped them out, they asked me if I wanted to buy them. I weighed them and was amazed that they weighed more than my Bontrager/Easton bars. I said, “no thanks.”

For hill simulation, you want a “smart” trainer. I’m using a wheel-on model (Saris M2, sub $250). It works okay. I don’t know how it compares to anything else because it’s the only one I’ve used.

Went out for the local fast-guys/gals group ride this morning. It’s been over 2 years since I’ve done this version of the ride. Things went better than expected. I felt comfortable and in control on the flat and fast first part of the ride, and was reminded of one of the magic moments of cycling - rolling at 30+mph in a big group with not a lot of effort. I dug fairly deep a few times when the group got into the hilly part of the route, but stayed with the lead group to the foot of the final climb, where I unplugged and rolled up at my own pace. Overall, I’m pleased with my fitness at the moment, and today’s effort was the kind of work I needed.

Zwift hub is a direct drive trainer (NOT wheel on) and most likely a better unit than our SNAP. But a well functioning used SNAP is certainly an option.
