On the topic of dark shows, my wife and I have pretty much stopped watching Mad Men for that reason. We really enjoy it, it's such a well written and well acted show, but damn, it's so depressing. I just can't handle that much of it.

Drinking, smoking, and getting laid at work is depressing?

I guess in the sense that it shows how far we've digressed. Now we only have bike forums.

Quick Tech Question:

Can I use a displayport to link up two different monitors (I.e. different max resolutions) without sacrificing resolution on the better monitor?

I brought my monitor from home in to use at work since I wasn't using it. I want to use that for applications and leave my email open on the old tiny monitor. Is there any way to do this without sacrificing some of the resolution on my better monitor?

The work computer is old and clunky. Probably a super basic graphics card. No dual monitor slots. Only a displayport.

Thanks!

Edit: This sounds like it's not worth doing from what I'm reading since it treats the monitors as one giant display, right?

Nothing wrong with a giant display. You can just drag your email over to that monitor. When you maximize an application, it maximizes inside its current display, so you end up with the workflow you were after. You can manually resize stuff to span monitors though, but with different sizes, the two monitors make a shape that's a rectangle with a missing rectangle anchored below/above the smaller monitor. So a spanned app can only be as tall as the smaller monitor unless you're willing to not see part of the app.

I guess you're right. He's the head of cardiothoracic surgery at both USC and Children's Hospital Los Angeles, as a surgeon, the guy is bad-assed. Use any term you want. The surgery I had is only done by about 5 surgeons in the whole country. When I was talking to one of his staff prior I was commenting on the complexity. He said, "Your heart is an easy one to do it on (it was blown up like a balloon at the time, it's smaller now). He does this same surgery a couple times a month on babies whose hearts are the size of walnuts. Those are the tricky ones." He's the only guy in the country that does these surgeries on both children and adults.

The cool part is that he would actually talk to me about it as well. I did my homework by immersing myself in learning about valve replacements for about a month. I could at least speak the language when we had our consultation. He was completely willing to answer my questions and address concerns. It was like a training ride with a seasoned pro. He was completely at ease going at any pace I wanted, but felt absolutely no need to defend his territory.

I thought it treats both monitors as one large monitor so any application in full screen goes to all the real estate of both monitors till you resize it. Isn't that correct?

no. most dual display managers treat each monitor separately. makes it easy to say, have email open full time on the right and have whatever is immediate in front of you.

I run email on a 22" monitor (portrait) on the right, a 22" monitor landscape in front of me (main work display) and my ultrabook's 14" monitor on the left with BF and other nonsense internet on it. As I seem to have intense ADD it keeps my eyes busy.

Fat Boy - happy for you. I'm curious, do you have posts that have info on the what you had done, why, what made you think there was an issue, how you detected it, how it was diagnosed, etc? sorry in advance, I missed it.

For the sake of clarity, it still does behave like one big monitor when navigating with the mouse. Pulling windows between monitors, it's just one big desktop. You can throw windows from apps like Photoshop on different monitors if you like. The apps generally behave as if they're only on the single monitor you drag them to, when you maximize them...

^^ that.

I feel like the productivity increase in multi-monitor setups would be totally lost by looking at one app across a huge monitor. Eyes can only focus on so much space at a time.

somewhat related to this nerdy discussion; have you guys seen mouse without borders? https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl....aspx?id=35460

lets you use one mouse/keyboard for two separate computers, copy/paste too.

I haven't really talked about it much here, until now. I was born with a bicuspid aortic valve, which leaked. It was first found when I was about 8 years old. At first mildly, but as I got older, it was severe. This led to an enlarged left ventricle and an aortic aneurysm. I got my yearly checkups and just didn't pay it much attention. After my August checkup in 2010, my cardiologist said, "OK, it's time to get it taken care of." LV was 7.6cm and aorta was 4.3cm. The valve was leaking like a siv. Ironically, I was riding pretty strong (for me).

So I had a Ross Procedure with a modified Bentall. It's a double valve (aortic and pulmonary) replacement with a sleeved, cadaver aorta.

I was on my bike on a trainer on day 6. Nothing strenuous, mind you, but determined to do what I had to do to get healthy. That first ride was an average of 49 watts. Day two was 51.

Since then, the only power numbers that I haven't been able to better are from about 8 seconds and below. Everything else has been a small, but consistent, gain.

Well, right, but I thought this was very different than say having two monitors hooked up to two different inputs for graphics cards that have them.

The display port cable only goes into one jack and it has to be split to go to two monitors, so I'm not sure how that works. Alternatively, I could have one monitor in the DVI and one in the display port, if that even works.

This is a super basic onboard graphics card which is why I'm skeptical. Also, my work monitor was taken away so I'd have to figure out how to get it back but I probably could. And yes, the goal is to be able to have email/documents open on one screen while doing analysis on another.

I have a friend that was born with something like this. He ended up with a bit of an infection after his surgery so he had to stay in the hospital for a bit, but he's doing great now. I visited him after his surgery but he had to have a couple of revisions through childhood and this was the last one.

Glad to hear you're doing well. I remember you talking about having had surgery and getting back on the bike.

Well, I don't know for sure, but the traffic can be bad on the surface streets as well, that's all I'm saying. And Salem is far enough out there that you lose a fair amount of time on the smaller roads anyway. I think this Waze thing is your best bet, but my experience in general is that you can only plan extra time for traffic, there's little hope of avoiding it on any reasonable route to anywhere. It's true that 128 has been slow this summer due to construction.
