Beautiful November day - 39 degrees when I left the house, 61 degrees when I got back. 53 miles north - making up for lost time since I only got out once in October.
Most of the color is gone - we’ve had a couple of freezes and it snowed last week. Nice “mare’s tail” clouds today.
Need to address the rust soon - bike is due for a complete overhaul. 12000+ miles since I put it together in 2017.
I’m just 52 miles away from 2K for the year - want to try for 2300, but the wx needs to hold.

Got off a bit later for some reason....raced down a hill to catch a glorious sunset, and the sun got away. Continued on for a 12 mile loop. I had put batteries in the spare (weak) head light instead of the good one and had to do some fussing in the dark half way home because it got really dark. Saw a few deer including "limpy mcbuck" an 8 pointer I found hiding in my yard this morning with a flesh wound. I felt bad chasing him off but didn't want my kid mixing it up with a big wounded animal. He crossed Infront of me about 3 miles from home moving deliberately, and not pausing to get any more life advise from me...

Short ride to town on the Specialized Sectour.
The lake will be completely frozen over soon.
It's nice that this bike is light enough to easily carry up a few flights of stairs.
South Park City is closed up for the winter and now winters tourists so the town is pretty dead. Most of the businesses on front street are closed on Tuesdays this time of year.

I caught that famous bug last week so this was my first Fall Back ride of the year. Put some plastic fenders on the Grand Jubile for some expected rain next week — and they are silent.
A moment after this stop, a very large dolphin was racing down the beach in about 5 feet of water spending about 1/2 the time in the air. Crazy.

A “where did I ride yesterday” post.
Not so weird anymore weather continued yesterday with high of 82F. I took the opportunity to head up to the Blue Ridge one more time before it gets too cold up there. I did the Ravens Roost climb on the Merckx Century. A couple of years ago I put a Sugino compact crank on this bike so I’d be less reluctant to take it out in the hills. Well, that modern component was the cause of one of my more challenging mechanicals in recent memory. I had an outside chain drop on a shift to the big ring and the chain contrived to drop past the little pin behind the crank arm (the one that’s supposed to prevent the chain from getting tangled up in the crank) and once down there refused to come back out. I spent about 15-20 minutes tugging on the chain, levering it with a multi-tool and tire lever, cursing at it without result. I ended up having to break the chain to get it out. Chain went back together fine and I finished the ride as planned. One benefit of the breakdown was, while I was putting the chain back together, a nice couple asked if I needed any help. I was good by that point, said no but thanks for asking. I caught back up to them a little later and realized it was a couple of acquaintances I haven’t seen in a few years, so we had a nice time riding and catching up.
No pics of the mechanical as my hands were dirty, but you can see residue on the crank arm. Edit: If you think the pic is a little fuzzy, you're right. Forest fire about 40 miles to the north has things a little bit smoky. New normal I suppose.
I groused about the lack of reds in the fall colors in a previous post. They just decided to show up late to the party.

Temps were down to 4c this morning in London, but while the toes, nose, ears and fingers were chilly, I basked in the glow of the rich colors in a visit to Battersea Park.....

For a miriad of reasons, I had not been on a bike in 18 months. In the last 3 months, I've started lifting, walking, and dramatically cut carbs and processed food. Down 32 pounds, it was time to get back on the saddle. Out came the 1976 Motobecane Grand Touring, and we went on a 20 mile ride averaging 14mph. I'll take that. I could have easily done another 5-10 miles, but started getting really cold with a north wind blowing across the lake. It was a great morning.

Headed east
Mt Garfield. About 2000 feet above the valley floor.
Known for peaches, with a growing number of vineyards
Coffee stop
25 miles or so on 26” wheels with knobbies is slower/harder than on a roadie 700c 25mm drop bars. Which I’m OK with, given the cool temps. Lips don’t chap so quickly.

OK temps today in the 40's after several days of freezing temps and snow. Took a short ride on the back roads around Fairplay on the Marin MTB.
Looks like there will be snow and ice in places for the next 5 months or so on the dirt roads and trails now.
The Marin no money build from earlier this year with the size dialed in and tire pressure just right, has turned out to be one of the best riding bikes I have owned or road.

Got about 14 miles in. Rode to a boat landing and then heading home went through a little middle of nowhere neighborhood, full of kids. The first crews emissary (a wee little girl) flagged me down help save a cat.. The cat in question was a super mellow furball that they had extradited from a briar patch of some sort, but a section of thorny vine was still entangled in its underbelly. So with one kid bear hugging the cat, who was reposed with a wide eyed look of concern and all 4 sets of claws out, thankfully held its composure while I untangled the thorns and in the process removed enough fur to knit a chiwawa a cardigan.. so the cat was saved and after much rejoicing, I went on my way. I made it about 1/2 a mile before encountering a small black yapping cruise missile of a pug. It ran with me for a couple hundred yards before I stopped. A pickup slowed down to let me know that I had just met "Midnight" and drove off. Now that we had been properly introduced, I headed back to the yard he came from, with Midnight yapping away. The 2 boys there said that Midnight don't listen and he's impossible to catch. So I decided to try and out run him. Nope. So I went back and forth on the road 4 times before he got tired enough for the boys to distract him enough for me to get away. They said that he don't usually chase people like he was chasing me. I didn't try and explain the general etiquette of dogs chasing bikes... So I got down the road a bit and stopped to look back and the little bugger was tailing me about 100yds back, just to make sure..... He didn't follow when I turned the corner.... Made it the rest of the way home with no further incidents..

Kindy bad that Pike forest is in extreme cold weather forest fire danger conditions now.
Really nice weather today for the Mountains about 50 degrees and a bit sunny. Got the old Specialized Hardrock fixed up a bit and out for a local ride.

After a bit of thinking decided to put some tires I have on this bike for now 1.95 Alpha bite rear and Panracer Roar 2.10 front. not a great match but both good.. A nice set off 1.95 rear 2.10 matched front and rear tires for this bike are $75-100 new ouch. I seems nice tires are getting to cost as much as mid level used bike.

Nice mid-November day - clear and 44 degrees when I headed out. Rode 53 miles up to Lake Forest. Passed 2000 miles for the season - everything else is frosting from this point.
Decided to head down to the LF beach - it’s been unguarded since Labor Day. Still a little fall color hanging in there. Lake was a stunning shade of blue!
I was surprised to see a group in the water. Air temp was 44 degrees, water temp is 51 degrees. I don’t think it was a baptism, since one of the gals was in a bikini.
Had a snack out on the breakwater - glad to see they still have some limestone in place. Chicago replaced much of their’s with concrete (which is now covered in broken glass).
I love limestone!
Boards and kayaks racked up for the year.
Some beached Hobie Cats.
Steep climb up from the beach.
Seems like a police sting designed to clear Glencoe of “troublemakers”
Wearing 4 layers and was plenty warm for the ride. 15+ mph headwind for the last 25 miles. Upper 50s and early 60s all next week. Hoping the wx holds for the following weekend.

(Belated ride report - I've been reeally busy the past several days)
A recent Veterans Day tradition has been to ride up Yarnell Hill. From Congress, it's only 8.5 miles out and 8.5 miles back, but there is the matter of a teeny nearly-2000 foot climb in between. It ain't Alpe d' Huez (or even Mt. Lemmon), but it's a good test for seeing "what kind of shape am I in?" just before El Tour and the Phoenix Turkey Day ride.
This year, I was accompanied by my friend Karl, who climbs like I used to, and Victoria, a new rider with our group who makes up with enthusiasm what she hasn't achieved yet in experience. Victoria also only has one road bike - a Retrospec 44-16 singlespeed, which she chose for the day's ride.
We unloaded the ol' truck in Congress on a nice low-60s morning and began our climb. Shortly out of Congress is a rock formation that someone painted as a big happy green frog decades ago, and still is a-hoppin'.

The serious climbing starts about a mile in. AZ 89 (old US 89) has about a 7% steady upgrade for most of this length, and we warmed up while a gentle tailwind helped coax us uphill (if it were a warmer day, the tailwind would be most unwelcome).
As we approached the hill itself, the roadways snaking up the sheer rock face became clearer. The downhill southbound lanes (the higher ones) are the original 1920s alignment, whereas the uphill northbound lanes were added in the 1950s, when this was still a main route to northern Arizona. Since I-17 opened, the highway is much quieter, but still has a shoulder for most of the route.
We continued our climbing, with Victoria dancing on the pedals, as with her gearing there wasn't much choice. I was on my "alumispeedy" fast cruiser with its 1x9 36 front / 11/36 rear, and did my best to keep up with her.
We persevered, enjoying the fall temperatures and views.
About 2/3 of the way up, Victoria started cramping from all the standing, but she would not be deterred. We just kept a-pedaling...

Looking back at what we conquered
And after an hour plus of testing ourselves against the grade, we made up to Yarnell for lunch.
Happy at the accomplishment.
