Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My boss, the CSO, was out here this week to say thank you and farewell to my group, whose last day will be the 31st. As I may have mentioned, the company still wants me, and have offered me a retention bonus payable at the end of 2023, which was nice, but didn't really allay all my concerns. But we had a good conversation about the future of the company, and I'm feeling much better about it. My work will be completely remote, all bioinformatic analysis, so I can do it pretty much anywhere with a good internet connection.

Time will tell, but I'm no longer worried about the next 18-24 months, so Mrs. GJ and I are no longer in panic mode. Mrs. GJ is still looking at houses in Buffalo, but no longer thinking we need to get on a plane and go buy one. I have a couple years to convince her about the weather.

I have to be fully fasted for the procedure Friday. Not even water. Since I'd rather not face a splitting headache, I'm tapering down in preparation. AG has never seen me like this and is wondering aloud if I should take the week off work. Hopefully it will get better soon.

Otherwise I'm right there with you.

Took a nasty spill yesterday. If anyone tries to tell you the homeless situation in LA isn't that bad, they are lying. Matter of fact, it's worse.
Was riding on the Orange Line bike path yesterday, which in many spots, it's either tent city, tweaker city, or just covered in debris. I should avoid certain areas, but I deal with it. Anyways, was riding through one of the tent city areas when on of the residents decides to jump in the path in front of me. I slam the brakes, but not enough time. Sends both of us toppling, I fall hard on my right side. No head damage, but my hand and knee are swollen, and all around sore. Bike is in great shape, other than the bars twisted in the post a little, brighter shifted inward, and brakes pushed over slightly. I was able to readjust the brakes to get my wheels rolling clear through them and made it home.
Many other riders had warned me to stick with just the roads. I think I'll go back to doing that.

The reason I brought up the HG800 11-34 is it has a gap inside the 34t that allows it to spread around the hub body. On true 11-speed wheels it requires a spacer. You ought to be able to go with that.

Now it's a weird cassette gearing-wise, but it gets you rolling.

Right on, I didn’t realize that. I have an 11/34 cassette I wonder if it’s an hg-800

I was walking a MuP in Austin, and came across a tent city. I turned around instantly. Call it ignorance, I don’t deal with that where I live, but I can assure you I would never try and ride through one.

If it's 11-speed Shimano it should be; they're specifically non-series because of their weirdness. Give it a try; I expect it'll work.

"Compatible with GS cage rear derailleurs, the HG700-11 cassette offers low climbing gears perfect for mixed surface riding. It is compatible with both 10 and 11-speed freehubs."

Try it.

The last cog before the lock ring doesn’t engage the teeth on the free hub. I tried to get the lock ring to engage regardless, no such luck.

Ah well. Still, I think the HG-700/800 will work if you care to try. Otherwise, new wheel time.

Are you sure you removed the spacer before trying the new cassette?

Waiting all day for a delivery of soil, for fill. At one point he said 'afternoon'. I have to ride 15 miles, at old man pace, to pick up the car, before the sun gets too low. I told him by WhatsApp and by phone message that I'm leaving at 4.

If it’s that unpleasant, I am pretty sure you can get away with a couple no-doz (caffeine) and a sip of water the morning of your procedure. Go back to daily coffee, for goodness sake!
