oh snap, you mean my "raise the left/fill the right" methodology and preaching about mitochondrial density which is stimulated by vO2 efforts has been right all along. LSD is fun and good for losing weight, which is the only reason I ever do it.
In other news, my legs are sore from bicycle pedaling and the nubbin of pain in my ass when I ride is down to the size of an acorn instead of a grapefruit and riding didn't seem to make it worse. I hung on the back of the Saturday race ride and went to the front selection group for a minute before deciding that I wasn't certain if I was exacerbating the injury and returned back to the tail.
It's super sketchy at the back of that ride so I really ended up sitting about 2 seconds behind the pack which made for a decent steady workload.

Speaking of slow rides, this is making the rounds today:
The Myth of Winter Base Training For Cyclists | TrainingPeaks
The Myth of Winter Base Training For Cyclists | TrainingPeaks
But that's fine. What's annoying is these articles come out every year to tear down the mythical Straw Base. But I don't see a lot of people building a base period around 12 hours of Z2 a week these days. Most people doing "base training" on fewer hours are mixing in a substantial amount of tempo and/or SST work. And it's a lot harder to trash that kind of program, seeing as it's actually pretty effective.

Did about 30 minutes on the rollers yesterday to spin out a tough cross race on Saturday. The two weeks "off" from the last one really put the nail in the coffin, I cracked really hard and damn near got lapped. Had fun though. Season's over for real, now.
As for the rollers, it's been years and I need to adapt to them again. I do think the smaller diameter drums are a bit less forgiving than the big PVC rollers I learned on. But I think it's going to be a more pleasant way to tap out hours of engine work than a mag trainer.

Looking fwd to my FTP test tomorrow... Will likely record the highest value that I've obtained since I first started riding with a PM 18months ago.

3 rest days since my wisdom teeth came out today. Everything seemed to go well. Hopefully back on the bike Thursday.

3:15 Saturday with two ~20min efforts at FTP. I think this was a PR for my wettest ride. It seems like it rained an inch during the ride (weather underground reports 0.72 for the day).
3:30 XC ski yesterday - the first of the season. Trying to figure out what TSS I should assign to this. I feel like it contributes substantially to fatigue, but probably not so much to bike fitness.
Today is rest, with a little bit of yoga.

3 of z2 hours this morning - chilly (for us), but clear out.
Actually I tried to make it z2 (60-75% of ftp from what I gather), but I'm really bad at holding a steady pace on rolling terrain. If it was totally flat, it'd be easy, or all slightly uphill, it'd be easy..

So apparently golden cheetah has updated my modeled critical power from 252 (since Oct) to 263. Not that I use this model as the basis for anything, but if something is telling me I'm better, I'll take it!

Had three hard days in a row, off road, Friday - Sunday.
Today was an easy day on the trainer out on the porch, watching the rain come down. I read a book on my Kindle, with my landlord's collies curled up three feet away, snoring loud enough to wake the dead.

2' intervals. Geez, I thought I hated 1' intervals. I hate these twice as much. Trying to keep them steady in the 25mph gusts didn't help.

Question - is there a point of diminishing returns on threshold interval length? We usually speak of doing 10-20' threshold intervals, I was thinking of doing 2x25' later this week.

I don't think so, I think it's just hard to find enough road to do much longer than 20 minutes. I've done a couple of 2x1hr @ 90% this fall, if anything it seems slightly more potent.

It's also harder to concentrate for longer periods of time. I think it can be beneficial because of this though because it trains you to keep focus, and when you're burning like 1000+kJ/hr you have to practice eating at pace without choking as well.

You could weigh yourself and take your BP to tell you about hydration., but unless doing really hard stuff I doubt that would help.
