I actually thought they were good tips, but it's been my experience in leadership that yelling and screaming at the unknowing is the sign of a poor leader. I’m not saying that these guys in this pace line are trying to be leaders or even want to be, but it sounds like I wouldn't enjoy riding with them. The new jacks would be looking to them for guidance and instead get an earful of criticism when they mess up. They are leaders by proxy whether they like or not. If you don't want to teach then don't let new guys in. I'd much rather be told I couldn't ride with a group up front then get yelled at later. just my two cents.
i'd love to read more tips like this just so i have a better chance of not making a complete ass of myself the next time i find myself in a 30 mph paceline. it happens so often...

We'll yell because we don't have time to explain the intricacies and nuance of a paceline at that speed.
I know riders who will actually grab you by the jersey and physically remove you from the line. That's how important it is to us to NOT have to deal with you.
Elitist? OK, I'll go with that since we've worked hard to get to the elite level, and we want to train not teach on Tuesdays.
And seriously, it has nothing to do with ego. It has everything to do with training at the highest level possible. Don't confuse the two.

You are a ****** bag. Why let new people into your ride at all? If you tried that crap with me I would put my pump through your wheel. Idiot.

We were just talking about this thread. Now we always start off a group ride by telling new riders that they better do everything perfectly or we'll grab their jersey and throw them out of our line.
...when we stop laughing we usually let them in on the joke....usually.

Grabbing someone by the jersey and "removing" them is NOT COOL no matter what. If you or your friends were responsible for that person going down and injuring themselves, (or getting hit by a car) you could find yourself in a lot of trouble. Plus, you never know what kind of pyscho you could be pissing off.
Yelling is one thing, but you should never grab or push someone out of anger. Especially in a group.

Once again, I have to note the irony that those who are absolutely appalled by the notion of yelling or jersey grabbing somehow feel justified by responding with: punching, frame pump in the spokes, tackling, etc.

So, sure, educate them. But why yell? So you had to cover a bike length because someone dropped back early. I thought you were out there to work! Same goes for the rest of the stuff.
Bottom line is that there's a constructive, helpful way to teach someone something, and the snippy, snobbish, hostile way that makes people think you're a snob and hate the fact that they came out to ride with you. That's why people might think you're elitist--not because you ride in a paceline.
The whole "get it right or we're going to yell at you" a$$hole attitude is exactly what you claim it not to be--elitist. No egos? How about the entire group that chooses to intimidate the noob?. How about an experienced cyclist who tries to take a noob under his wing and instruct as they go? Might be more helpful than what you're doing...

If you're riding in a group moving that fast, you damn well better know what you're doing, or someone can get hurt.
It certainly doesn't mean that I'm against new folks on a ride--hell, just this past sunday I was teaching new folks how to ride in a paceline, some of them for the first time. But when the pace is high and everyone's suffering is NOT the time to be teaching anyone.
