Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Machka in the past week posted the following in the 50-plus forum thread about me and what happened a year ago:
He has a big seizure ... tonic clonic aka grand mal.
It was likely triggered by stress ... he had one of his most stressful weeks ... plus dehydration ... plus the flickering of the light in our basement when we turned it on.
We had gone down there after the ride Rowan mentions to build my new rowing machine. Flicked on the light ... and that was apparently the "last straw".
I am just glad I was here with him when it happened.

Machka tells me I basically collapsed, and was transferred to a 20-hour stay in the same neurological ward at the hospital where I was very first admitted last year. Much of what we have been able to configure is that I didn't drink during the ride and that contributed largely to setting off the problems. The CT scan at the hospital also demonstrated to me that the brain injury I sustained last year is somewhat permanent, and recovery has been based on being able to work to other undamaged parts of my brain to return to some level of normality.

My basic message these days is don't ride a bike without a helmet... or work by operating high-ish equipment without similar head protection.

Hummus
Frozen green beans
Frozen Apple strudel
Ice cream
Center cut bacon

I go there every week, we have one two minutes from my house
Oh, my, you must have upscale thrift grocery stores where you live. Our local area Adis may have any of those things on a given week but don't count on them being there next time that you go. The many Aldis in our are have been remodeled but the shelf stock still makes it look like a closeout store.

I told this Aldi story here last Christmas but here is the retell. My wife bought a small throw blanket at the checkout and I carried it to the car (no bags, remember) and by the time we got to the car, I was covered with little white fuzzballs. No way that my wife was going to have this in her house so she turned around and walked right back in and tried to return it. Didn't even get to the car. No go - Aldi doesn't do returns during the Christmas season.

Yes their model is to rotate stock in/out of availability. I think this is how they manage a wide variety of items in a small store.

Most of the items I listed (because they’re staples for us) are available at Aldi 85-95% of the time- eggs, bacon, yogurt, brioche, grass fed cheddar, blue cheese, pretzel chips, hummus, ice cream. A few are seasonal like spaezle, strudel and the blistered peanuts and labeled as such in the store.

Maybe this doesn’t fuss me too much because I’m big into letting available inexpensive produce drive our food consumption, which effectively means we eat what’s in season. So I think I don’t have a set expectation each week of what I’ll be able to get when I shop from any store. I tend to shop produce markets, farmers markets, Mexican markets, Costco but not traditional grocery stores. I have zero expectation of one stop shopping for food, since I’m too cheap to buy supermarket stuff for the most part.

Sounds like your Aldi is bleak however. I’ve never seen mine devoid of items on the shelves.

I checked with my wife and it was no CASH return even with receipt. They gave her an in-house gift card.

Our shelves are packed, just a lot of stuff in crushed, worn, or faded boxes and packaging. My wife buys some food there but i've always found the stores unappetizing.

I could have a personal problem with store appearances. I always feel like I need a tetanus shot after walking across a Walmart parking lot.

One shot will last you 10 years, or a good 5 years even around Walmart.

My Aldi is 20-30 minutes away in heavy traffic, so I virtually never visit there. But some of the items on Heathpack’s list intrigue me so I may have to visit again soon. I’ll plan to bring lunch for the trip.

Heading out for my second ride shortly. Sitting here looking at my saddle thinking about wrapping it in bubble wrap to add some padding. Plus, every time I hit a bump it will be a party. Pop, pop, pop!!!

remember, you live in Peoria Illinois. Our Aldi's here are nice. Not a huge fan but they do have low prices on some items and the quality is usually good. DSFDF.
Will it play in Peoria?

This makes me want to go to my favorite eastern European deli... I'd name-check it, but it'd be too much work to figure out the spelling.
