My wife and I drove into the heart of Brooklyn today to "audition" some kittens. Some ferals since domesticated, from the neighborhood I've worked for 40 years, so a fitting match. Found 2 we really like, told the foster mother and adoption person we would like to take these 2. Both males, one of them bolts for the door whenever it opens, may name him Scooter.
Hope this works out, been 12 years since we had a kitten.

Kitty died a few days after his 17th birthday. We knew he had inoperable, metastatic cancer, so we tried to give him the best last days we could.
We knew he had a weird affinity for strawberries. Not to eat, but just to rub himself on. Must be some plant smell he likes about them. So, we picked him an entire flat of strawberries, which he lied down on. Peak strawberry experience.
Within a week, he appeared to be in such pain that he wasn't even sleeping, in spite of the benzodiazepines (kitty valium), NK1 agonists (antinausea, anti-inflammatory, antidepressant maybe), and buprenorphine (opioid painkiller) we were giving him. We called in our vet friend Dr. Katie Parent, who euthanized him in the middle of the balcony garden on a calm evening. She was a gentle angel of death. We buried him deep beneath a cairn we built at the family home in northern Vermont, and planted over it with catmint. I miss him so much.

Thank you for the kind words. I am also not used to crying this much. There's all the times you expect to see him and he's just not there. I know he's better off not suffering, but still I miss him.

Took these guys home today. They are in love with the isolated cat room, it has carpeting so they can turn quickly as they bounce off walls. Its been 12 years since I had a kitten, I feel like a grandparent thats been given the 2 year old for the week. Maybe they'll nap and I can do the same. They sat comfortably in my arms on the hour long car ride home from the foster home. Good feeling about these cats, I think theyre going to grow up as good boys,

Looks like they’re off to a great start - best of luck with them & think about keeping them as indoor cats.

Names are Elliot and Simon. They got to explore the entire 2nd floor of the house this afternoon, they were scampering all over the place once they discovered all the rooms. Good cats these two, I've good vibes from them. They looked out the window yesterday and a lot now, I think saw birds flying by for the first time.

3 recent pics.
Sometimes I don’t get my chair!
I swear, it’s my bike socks you’re smelling!
Nap time truce.

I am sorry for your loss, and well understand it. Your lad here looks like he could have been the littermate of the long-gone Hannibal the Magnificent. He passed in his sleep in 2013, and I still think of him daily.
Funny thing was, getting a good photo of him was near-impossible. Here he is with his long-time associate, Hector the Abyssinian, in the wheelbarrow next to my bike workspace in 2006 -
After they pass, though, and after a certain amount of time grieving, I still think the best way to honor their memory is to make a home for another one - and don't be surprised when they find you instead of you finding them -

Can’t beleive how big Polly is getting! She will probably be the same size as Snickers the toy poodle.
This kitty could fit in my hand when I found her!
