High pressure is detrimental to Crr on rougher road surfaces. Most tracks are so smooth that it's not an issue,
I've seen several studies that show when you are traversing a rougher surface, like a tar road, lower pressure can help reduce Crr as the tire conforms to the bumps in the road and rolls over them, whereas with a higher pressure, the tire hits those smaller bumps and bounces.

During my road years, I tested the Mavic IO (borrowed) and an old Hed disc (borowed too) on my road time trial setup for a national race. Hard as f***ing rock. We even changed the tubes for wider ones (from 20 to 23) to get a more comfy ride. Nothing. I rode with a spoked-aero front wheel.
Edit: The wheels have a little sticker that says "Only track use". They really mean it.

I saw one mention in that thread that the reason that Mavic doesn't offer the IO for road is because it doesn't have a brake track. But, the point is, if it was that fast, they'd easily have them made with a brake track. The Mavic Ellipse also doesn't have a brake track, but their other spoked wheels do. It's an engineering decision.

Agree with Carleton, if there was any compelling reason to have a 5-spoke on the road, they could easily make one with a brake track.

5-spokes do look cool though.
I also remember a bunch of kids in my neighborhood had plastic 5-spoke wheels on their BMX bikes. But that was many, many years ago.

The envy of all 80's BMX kids.
It was quarterpipe shows like this at local bike shops that got us all hyped:
Random fact: I once did a photoshoot with the

The Io has been used on the road. When Ivan Basso was one of the top GT contenders, he, and a few others used custom Io's with a brake track for use in (I think) the Giro prologue. It was an extremely short, fast stage, with a tailwind the whole way. It may have been made as a "just in case" wheel for the day for the big teams in the case of ideal wind conditions.
You can clearly see the brake track in the second picture. That was Basso's bike.

I've heard rumors of iOs being made to order - like different rim widths, different tubular-bed shapes (deep, shallow)... if that's the case, I can't imagine a brake-track version is too far off.
I thought I'd seen ones with an aluminum rim, but, did some GISing and couldn't turn anything up. Just road Cometes with the alu rim.

The IO on that shiv is a track model... I know cause I worked at the shop that took that photo.
I don't think the IO on the cannondale has a brake track either just a bit of marking from the pads... see this alternate shot:

True, you can run cork/cork based pads on a bare carbon rim. It's how everyone first used carbon wheels before brake tracks were engineered apart from aluminum hoops on the wheel. It doesn't give you the greatest braking power, or feel/modulation, but for a fast, non-technical course, as it was that day, it would more than suffice.
They could also have just used the best brake pads from performance based perspective, without regards to equipment longevity/re-use. These teams have the budgets to trash a few single use wheels, even if it is an Io.
I just remember reading about it at the time, that these wheels were modified for road use, but can't remember specifically what it/they were. It could've just been an axle swap with appropriate pads.

Photo credit me on those first two, Anna Meares and Dan Ellis, Keiokaku Tokyo, 2008 or 2009, can't remember which. The rear IO is seen fairly often in Japan, no idea why. These were probably loaner wheels from the home riders.

I remember that! Everyone was asking "what's with the washing machines in behind the bikes?" I believe you mentioned that those were betting terminals.

A couple weeks ago somebody posted a link to a company that makes, among other things, aluminum bars roughly in the shape of Scattos.
I thought it was Selcof, from that back and forth about Planet-X's offerings, but it's not. Can't find the conversation.
Anybody remember?

No, I'm talking about a company that's not Selcof, and that makes an aluminum bar.
Conversation started here and I poked around on their website and found a traditional bend bars in 36, 34, and 32cm - which is crazy. And now I can't remember what company it was.
