Found a almost completely unmolested 1986 Start Shosse. Even the bar wrap and tires are original. Some of the spokes have been swapped out and all of them have been soldered at some point. Luckily i have a NOS wheelset laying around so i should get this back to fully original condition. Rides suprisingly nice for one of these, brakes are terrible though, pads are rock hard.

What is the purpose for soldering the spokes? I assume that makes the wheel more rigid? How do you true the wheel if the spokes can't move?

This is an excellent thread, thanks geeteeiii for all the information! I was just gifted a mostly original Tourist in fairly typical (rough) shape. I haven't had a chance to get into it yet, but it has an aluminum riser bar, which based on Russian Wikipedia would put it in mid- to late-'80s production. Looking to restore it, but there's not a whole lot of information available in English, and my Russian is quite poor, so the info in this thread and the ample photos of other stuff coming from KVZ is invaluable.
