Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Back in college when my girlfriend and I lived together (oh no!) and she hit me with that line. Never forgot it. Still don’t know what she was talking about - obviously I was, and still am, too dense.

As a public service and so nobody can feel as dense as I did, below is an explanation why women do not want to be drafted. I will try to make it painfully clear:

women have an innate fear of being *****, because a very high percentage have a female friend who has been victimized. <- There it is. The long and short.

A woman’s fear, whether real or imagined, it’s still fear. Never draft women you don’t know. If you can’t understand that, out of the gene pool!

Do sparkle watts cause burns on your legs like metal slag? Must be why cyclists wear long socks. Probably looks cool if riding in the dark.

I think hardcore triathletes do it all the time. It might be a rite of passage. That's about it, though. I don't think they pull on Superman's Cape, or spit into the wind. I don't think they pull the mask off that old Long Ranger or mess around with guys named Jim/Slim either. I could be wrong. They might spit into the wind. Maybe.

Oh.

Well, then, I sure hope my newly acquired 1985 Centurion Ironman was never owned by an actual triathlete. Because, ew. Needs a good wash anyway.

This is why you should never ever buy used cycling shoes on Slowtwitch.

I've stopped trying to guess what people will or won't like, and whatever it is, there's probably a discussion forum for it.

fwiw, this also extends into the virtual Zwift world - hence a lot of gender separated events

I guess there might be people who like piss blowing back into their face or bodies as they ride.

I would not bet against that possibility. Humans are weird.

Never gave that any consideration. On Zwift, I'd just hitch a ride whenever I needed a break even though I don't do that on the road. Have a hard time believing that any woman would consider that creepy since there is so much anonymity. Unless you happened to be drafting the same person every time they are Zwifting. And, I can't imagine how you could figure out a way to do that.

But, hey, you learn something every day.

It's not always clear whether you're drafting a man or a woman on Zwift. Not to me, anyhow. Maybe I need a higher quality rig.

Is the gender separation not for competitiveness like pretty much any other competitive sport (except tennis mixed doubles)?

You'd think maybe, but the separation option is often available for general group rides (tour de XXX or whatnot) and ftp-based workouts.

Good to know. One day, I will learn to ride at a steady enough pace to join a group ride.
