I'm sort of surprised to hear you say that. We're pretty much the same age, and I just grew up with Star Wars and Star Wars toys. We had all the toys, or at least it felt that way. Star Wars was the first movie I saw in the theater. (Before VHS, it was not uncommon for big movies to come back to the theater.) I was Luke Skywalker for Halloween. My brother was Han Solo.

While my brother, who is a year and a half younger than me, also had many of the toys and did dress up as Han Solo, never really got into it as much as me. He was more into sports. We spoke this past weekend, and he said he didn't think he'd actually seen any of the movies all the way through. I'm pretty sure he saw Return of the Jedi in the theaters with me as a kid, but I am not surprised he wouldn't remember it.

Speaking of, one of our favorite Christmas stories growing up revolves around Star Wars. My parents dragged us to my grandparents - dad's parents - for a visit. We never liked going there. They were not friendly or loving grandparents, and their house was always cold and dark. We were probably 4 and 5 years old. Anyway, they bought my brother a Star Wars ship. They bought me a globe.

My aunt (dad's sister) even brought it up last year at my cousins wedding. "What kid wants a globe? That was a stupid gift."

(Side note: I still have the globe, which shows the Soviet Union, divided Germany, and Zaire.)

The other big Christmas story is about the GI Joe Aircraft Carrier. It was 7 feet long. I asked for it for several years and never got it. My parents said we didn't have room for it in the house, to which I always pointed out there was plenty of room in the living room - you know, the room with the fancy furniture that we never went into or used. Anyway, about 10 years ago, my mother bought me a GI Joe Aircraft Carrier for Christmas. This one was maybe 3 feet long. She told me I could no longer say I never got everything I wanted for Christmas. It gave me a good chuckle. We ended up putting it into a closet unopened and donating it to Toys for Tots the next year.
Don't get me wrong, I like the original Star Wars movies, and grew up with them as well. I don't recall having having much memorabilia from it, maybe a blanket or something.

I just don't think not seeing it is that big of a deal. However, my gf had never seen "Goonies" before, that really threw me off.

As for GI Joe - holy **** did I want everything and anything to do with it. I got some kind of cruiser boat at some point, it wasn't as big as the aircraft carrier but was a pretty big deal. I broke it somehow I'm sure.

Happy holidays everyone!!!
That's great. Happy holidays.

I'm freaking out at the thought of taking tomorrow and next week off. I have a huge project with a PITA client who advanced the schedule by a couple months and is pushing us. I'm going to be absolutely slammed when I get back, and stressed the whole time I'm gone. What's the point of taking vacation again?

Ha - I know the feeling. Doesn't really feel like time off if you're thinking about work the whole time.

Star Wars was the first movie I saw in a theater that I remember where I didn't get violently ill from the violence (original Batman) or start crying hysterically because of all the scary stuff happening (Willy Wonka). I was a bit older, two friends told me I'd just *LOVE* this movie, and we made the trek into the nearby city to a huge theater near a planetarium that later burnt down.

The scrolling type was nutty, I was shaking with adrenaline, and then this puny ship is on the screen, laser shots behind it. I was like, oh, brother, this is like Star Trek. I hate Star Trek.

Then the Star Destroyer came into view. And got bigger and bigger and bigger and I'm sure I was screaming because it was just so over the top. I remember my friends telling me "I told you you'd like it" while I was trying to watch the corridor attack (I was thinking it wasn't the best tactics for the rebels) and thinking that Darth Vader seemed a bit fake, holding the guy up using just one hand.

Junior (he's 5 1/2) is into Star Wars a bit. It's funny to me how he calls them by their episodes. "Can we watch 'A New Hope'?" "What? Which one is that?" Haha.

I remember the cards and the gum. They had a specific smell, it brings back a flood of memories when I get a whiff of that gum smell. We had an x-wing, tie fighter, the action figures, and a bazillion cards. We haven't come across that stuff in my dad's stuff so I think it's gone.

Star wars was my child hood. Like formative memories level.
The phantom menace came out when I was in first grade (I think) and it was what all my young friends and I bonded over. Now a days it's not even worth seeing episode I, but to a 8 year old kid, holy **** was that movie awesome! Space Fights! Double Lightsaber! Pod Racers! Racist caricatures of underwater fish?!

Proper order to watch the (Original..) movies is 4,5,2,3,6. With the epilogue/filler movies in there, not sure how I would do it now a days.
Funny thing about episode 1 is most fan edits cut it down to about 15 minutes worth of content for the WHOLE series.

(22yo, born in 95)

My memory might be failing me here. I remember going to the theater to see star wars with a friend I made in first grade. Was so sure it was Episode 1, but I would have been 4 yo when phantom menace came out, which is not adding up. I'll have to ask my dad when I'm home.. Must have been Attack of the clones. (Natalie Portman <3)

I watched all of the prequels so many times over the course of my childhood it's all blending together. The Parents had a minivan with a fancy dvd player that my brother and I watched these movies on repeat for all the years we had that car.

Maybe because the land became too expensive? There was one near here that had 4 screens. There was one that had a clip for your car antennae so you got the movie sound through your radio, instead of those clunky speakers you would hang inside your window. That meant jump-starting a lot of cars after the movie.

Now they could just Internet stream the sound on one of the music services.
It is the lawn chairs in the back of the pickup and picnic baskets that I miss.

Some of us live places that have actually seasons you know, lol. We put different tires on, most outdoor businesses close, Rita's Italian ice closes (possibly the saddest part of fall), pools all close.

We’ve got a 6 screen drive in just down the road:

https://www.westwinddi.com/locations/sacramento

I think I’ve been there once, but might be confusing it with the now closed drive in in Santa Cruz that we went to a lot through high school.

Looks like the nearest to me is about an hour (America's oldest apparently, continuous operation since 1934). I've never been to one.

A few are still around.
