Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The previous company I worked for had, shall we say, a large, negative binary event, which led to laying off about half of the workforce of around 200. Because the company was built around a single project that went bye-bye, this meant entire departments were laid off. All of us managers who had direct reports who were to be laid off had to attend a training session in how to lay people off - call them to your office; tell them the position was being eliminated for business reasons having nothing to do with their performance; be sympathetic but don't give them false hope; make sure to thank them for their work; don't make it about yourself; direct them to the place where the severance and outplacement packages were being explained and distributed.

The next day, I learned that a number of the folks I had attended the training with were themselves laid off. I don't know whether or not they knew it at the time. I'm not sure which would be worse.

Which reminds me, we had a group get-together at a local trendy spot and little did we know, it was Burger Only night and a couple attendees are vegans. The waitress pointed out that they did have veggie burgers. Onee vegan said, "I'm a vegan. Why would I want to eat something that tastes like dead flesh?" I told her that's what I keep saying. Commit to your ideals.

Why not?

If a vegetarian doesn't want to eat fake meat because it's not really that healthful, that's fine. But there's no ideal regarding "taste."

Had a nice lake front ride with my bride this morning. It was her first exposure to rollers, one with an 8% grade that caught us by surprise.

Bam, I know Zone 1 is nothing, but for her it was about Zone 400. 😎

Burgers after, hers with real meat and mine with turkey.

What if you're opposed to flesh eating for philosophical reasons? Just because it's fake doesn't change their appetite.

I shouldn't have brought it up since I eat anything and everything so I shouldn't say anything more. I apologize for starting something personal.

Damn, I'm in a bad mood, today.

Had to see my eye doc this morning and that always makes me grouchy, not to mention, he was running way behind.

Heating/AC guy was supposed to service my AC unit at 11:00 and didn't show until 12:30. Grouchy.

Went to pick up my pancreas meds and the pharmacy was closed for lunch. Wut? Had to wait until the pharmacist(s) returned. Grouchy, again.

Grouchy old man problems.

I apologize in advance for any and all posts that I make in the future.
