How high up before you can feel the affects of altitude?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You need to get acclimatized slowly to a high altitude. Most people can adapt if given time. But its not unpleasant to be a mile above sea level.

I'm debating whether or not I want to do the Virginia Six Gap Century in three weeks.
That averages out to only 5 miles a day. Sounds doable.

Not too concerned about that actually. I looked at Strava, and apparently I climb more than that on my normal 60 and 80 mile rides.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I should be fine then, but it sure sounds like a lot when your state doesn't even have a mountain in it!

See this chart:

Nice.

I usually assume it becomes an issue above 2000m.

I checked out the route map and at mile 77 there's a 3.1-mile hill with 7.1% grade! Really and truly, I salute you, your legs and your lungs!

That chart is interesting. Even when acclimated I'm missing about 4% of my power.

There's not as much of a difference between being acclimated and not. So is your body getting used to the altitude over time or does your mind get used to the pain?

I definitely felt a difference after spending 3 months at 7000 feet and returning to sea level. Didn't last long, though.

^ There are definite physiological changes. increased red blood cells, increased hematacrit, amongst other changes.

Takes 2 weeks or more, and it goes away fairly fast.

I found it interesting how equal everyone becomes once you start to venture above 10k
