William Saroyan, Pulitzer Prize and Academy Award winning writer. Born and died in my hometown of Fresno, California. In his later life he lived just a few miles from me, and during my high school and college years, I saw him riding around town a few times.

just look at their mounts! big heavy ungainly things with wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide handlebars
every picture one sees of velo polo shows machines with very narrow bars...even chopping off one side of the bar for mallet clearance/freedom of movement
one sees many small wheeled cycles employed for their nimbleness & ease of maneuver
if these ladies ever played in a game the studio would have carefully staged (choreographed!) it...

We played a no-rules, full contact version, and it did get bloody. I got a bunch of stitches once when someone's big chainring got me in the lower calf or upper ankle. I kept playing for a while, but they made me go to the hospital when the blood filled my shoe and was leaking up through my shoelaces. It bothered them more, to look at it, than it was bothering me — I wanted to play polo dammit! I think I was spraying blood on them and their bikes and mallets too, so, fair enough.
The only female we ever got to play was Jacquie Phelan, and she only lasted a few minutes before declaring us all crazy. And we were going easy on her! Y'know, because of her being the multiple-time National Champion and all. Nobody wanted to go down in history as the guy who ended her racing career.
Later I played a safer version called (somewhat pretentiously) "Official Bike Polo" (OBP). In fact I played in the very dubiously proclaimed "World Championships" of OBP, in Moab, maybe 1990-ish. They had so many rules, to make it safe, that they took most of the fun out of it for me, but it did open it up for people who didn't have a death wish. In fact all teams had to be co-ed.
Luckily our little ad-hoc team (which we put together on the spot, the day before) had a real kick-ass lady who was very fit and very competitive. She had gotten to Moab by riding there from Alaksa! We might have won, except it was a full moon the night before, so we rode the slickrock trail by moonlight practically all night (coincidently also with the aforementioned Miss Phelan, who was the instigator of the moonlight ride). And a bottle of vodka was drained. And one of our best polo players, the guy who'd also ridden from Alaska, fell off a cliff from too much vodka. He fell on a juniper tree that might have been 200 years old and smashed it to bits, sad, but he'd have been taken away in a medevac helicopter (or a hearse) if not for that tree. He laughed and finished the ride but was pretty beat up the next day. So one of us was cut, bandaged and bruised, and we all were sleep-deprived and hung over (or still drunk) on the big day. Still worth it though — slickrock by full moon is still one of my favorite rides ever. And nobody took that sham "World Championships" seriously anyway, much to the frustration of the married couple that owned OBP and were trying to promote it into a "thing". I wished them well, but it seemed like a doomed idea.
Anyone else ever play OBP?
Much later, in the 3rd millennium, there was a thriving polo scene in Seattle, but none of them were even aware of our previous scene from the '80s. Some of course hadn't even been born yet when were on local TV.
