The elevated chainstay design offered the possibilty of creating a shorter rear end. Rings vs tire clearance was no longer a constraint. Next to that it also eliminates chainsuck.
It wasn't a Koga invention btw. Mountainbike Action cooperated with Yeti on an e-stay design and covered it a couple articles. The Yeti Ultimate. The Ultimate evoked a serious hype, but I would think for example Mantis was earlier.

I always loved the paint coming out of Chris Chance's shop in the late-80s and '90s, some for their beautiful subtlety like this one and some for their shear humor and awesome detail like the ones with small cartoons all over. I don't remember who was doing his paint at the time, but I sure stole from them alot!
I'm not usually a fan of lower end bikes, but I'd ride that Miyata with pride. Beautiful!

Just did some major mods on my '88 Trek 900. It's seriously hybridized now, but I like it this way. Should make a good commuter scooter. Drop bars, Suntour bar end shifters, Tektro levers, V-brakes and narrower 1.5" road tires. I can easily throw some knobbies on it if I ever want to do some real trails.

After riding a bike with 1.5'' tires i don't think i can ever go to anything smaller, feels so nyyyyth. ALSO - i bought this bike with all its original parts on it for $50, sold the suntour bear traps that were on it for $60 on ebay and the suntour brake levers for $15. The only thing i don't like is the fork takes the 21.1 stem so i had to use some crap sun-lite stem but other than that i love it, makes me laugh at 26'' $1,200 long haul truckers.

One interesting thing I noticed on this ride. One woman I know in the group just bought a used mountain bike in order to have greater comfort, at the same time as I was putting drops on my mountain bike for greater comfort. It's very much a personal preference thing.

This is a supper fine, nicely balanced, very durable ride. A great climber with its low gearing, but will rattle your teeth in a rocky descent.

Some features of interest: the front brake cable is routed through the stem; the elliptical shaped Bio-Pace crank set; the easy-access bar shifters with optional SIS system-indexed-shifting.
I added a computer, bar-end mounted mirror, and the Panaracer wide red walls (FireXC Pro 2.1), and bottle holder. And, lots of touch-up paint as I repacked hubs over the winter.
It is made in Taiwan, with strong weld beads.
