Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yeah, we had Drivers Ed, but the school was so small we only had one teacher, and one car - yeah, it had the auxiliary brake pedal. The teacher lived in my town so the few times I drove with him he'd swing by my house and I'd drive a few miles to where another student lived, we'd pick THEM up and they'd drive either to school or to the next student's house. IIRC we'd end up with 3 of us plus him.

EDIT: The car was an Oldmobile Cutlass. Looked like this but IIRC had a white vinyl top.

We always had 5 students plus the instructor. Those cars had super sensitive brakes so the first time each student stepped on the brake we would all lunge forward against our lap belts. Or, if a student failed to signal or made some other mistake the instructor would jump on the brake. I got so tired of getting jolted forward in those things.

One channel Mrs. GJ and I have been enjoying is Geoff Lindsey, a British linguist, discussing how different English speakers pronounce things differently, which just shows you how truly nerdy we are!

Even past that, I can't stand the clickbaity covers with a shocked face and bold text superimposed. Those are everywhere - bikes but also TVs and lord knows probably everything. I despise what YooToob rewards.

I also just don't want to sit and passively watch something, really. If someone wants to get me information, type it out. I'm not interrupting what else I'm listening to just because someone's borderline illiterate.

Shadetree mechanicing is infinitely easier with the Youtube of today than it was back in the day when I only had Chilton's (or even the factory manual), asking autoparts store cashiers, and grilling the drunk mechanic that lived next door.

Ever since buying a couple pairs of bibs that ended up being completely useless, I'm very leery of experimenting. I got a pair of Performance Ultras a few years ago, which appeared to be of pretty good quality, but after a few miles the legs creep up and the fabric bunches in the crotch. I've tried to use them a number of times and I keep having to stop and pull the legs down again. And then there were the $60 Black Bibs that feel good, fit well, but slide all over the damn saddle so I can't stay in one spot. I keep sliding forward on the saddle, which doesn't happen with any other shorts.

I would include servicing appliances (or deciding: nope, not doing that, before breaking them worse) too.

True! I've been able to do a few repairs to Mrs. GJ's Sienna that cost only parts, like fixing the passenger side window, or the handle for the sliding door. I even replaced her front door speakers. BUT the car is so old that they need replacing again!

IIRC, our school's drivers' ed. car was a Malibu. I drove it once.

I still have Haynes manuals for cars I no longer own.
