Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What Type of Cycling Jacket Do You Wear?

As I was out on my GT bike today, I realized I need a new cycling jacket.

The one I have is a Banff Designs Goretex, that while still very functional, is just a bit 80's looking in color (Purple body with High Vis Chartreuse sleeves & shoulders).

I like the cycling cut of my Banff, and the packability of it, I just wish the color was not so outdated.

Recommendations anybody?

I really like this Pearl Barrier Jacket, but I think its designed more for colder weather, and I just want a packable shell.

I just wear a fluorescent yellow jacket, and I have a patch adhered to it. I'm the one in the middle.

NICE

I have lots of packable outter wear jackets, I just want a cycling specific one with the longer sleeves, and back, yet one that is a bit more streetable, Is that mutually exclusive?

Maybe I should just focus on a cycling jacket, and be damn if it looks dorky off the bike

I love my North Face although it's black, has been great in 40-65 degree weather with appropriate under layering. I wear mine off the bike too. It's model number 61661.

NIce, Is that TNF a Cycling jacket? Doesn't look like it. Which would make it very streetable

I already own 4 TNF Gortex Jackets, the last I bought in fall, an Ama Dablam Stretch 3 layer Goretex, also in Black.

The others are a Katchana 3 layer Goretex, Mountain Jacket 2 Layer Goretex, Mountain Light 2 Layer Goretex.

I do have TNF Hyvent in bright yellow, but it has an attached hood, and while good for the commute, may not be good for fast road riding. It would flap in the wind

I like the black because it goes with anything, especially gray/black spd-sl's and Fassa Atmos.

I hear you Nice Kit

I do like the Pearl Instinct in the blue, it's a cycling jacket, yet is somewhat streetable.

Well the wife wanted to go for a bike ride today as well, so I thought, why not.....?

So I donned my North Face Hyvent, and it actually worked well enough for the ride. I still would like to get a tighter cut for cycling, but this will do in a pinch. It started to rain pretty good on us half way in to the ride Still lots of snow and ice on various parts of the road and trails.

For rain, I usually just use one of the clear plastic ones like in the picture above... The greenhouse effect can suck when climbing, but it will keep you warm on the way down. Plus...they are cheap. Around here you don't go for too many rides where you are getting rained on the whole time, though I know some guys who are very happy with their jackets from showers pass for the rain. If its just cold, I have a yellow cannondale jacket that the arms zip off of that I like, as well as sometimes I will just wear a windproof vest and arm warmers.

I like any water-proof/water-resistant shell with a wicking liner. Or try www.foxwear.net for a grea price on a nearly custom made jacket in a variety of possible colors. I have not bought from them but have seen a couple of good reviews.

Thanks Ken, I'll check out the link.

Jakey, thats not a bad Idea... A convertable would be very versatile, doubling as a vest.

There is a Campagnolo convertable I like, it's in Red, not my first choice, but I don't mind it at all.

I like their jackets because they come in race fit, unlike Pearl Izumi whose jackets are almost entirely baggy fit. Sugoi, Garneau, and Cannondale also make nice slim fit jackets at reasonable prices. What model you need depends on how much waterproofness you really need vs. breathability. There are no jackets on the market that are very breathable and very waterproof.

I had to use those when I was racing. They only use clear ones because you have to show your team colors. But they did a fine job on blocking what little rain we get here in So Cal, even one race with hail. But since I'm no longer a walking billboard, I'm going to find a yellow jacket to make sure people see me in low vis conditions. I just hate spending $50-100 on a jacket I'll use maybe 5 times a year.

Viper, you still have snow on the ground? ouch said that it was back in the 40's here today in Milwaukee

I also take my mtb out when the weather is less than perfect (seems like 99% of the time)

This is what I have, nothing fancy but it does a good job, I like the reflective material it has, a little safer with crazy drivers

For temps less than 35 I wear an Arc'Teryx Gamma SV. I don't understand why people buy North Face crap when Arc'teryx is around. I am well versed in my outdoor gear as I work for a retailer and Arc'teryx is FAR superior in function and craftsmanship.

In temps above 35 I wear a regular jersey and layer accordingly (combo of an underarmor long sleeve and patagonia midweight T...and armwarmers.)

When it's raining I have a clear cycling jacket I put on over my jersey.

If you were really well versed, you would not make such globally ludiciuous statements.... The North Face makes some of the finest outdoors equipment around. Sure Ar'Teryx makes just as nice stuff, so does Patagoinia, Mountian Hardware...etc There is no need to call something else crap to justify your stuff. The Stretch Goretex Ama Dablam is one of the finest 3 layer Gore Tex jackets made.

The North Face also has one of the best replacement warranty in the business, and they have earned me as a customer for life. They have replace entire outfits for me even after 6 or more years of use, due to no fault of theirs, rather because I treated it poorly, or it was my fault.

I have backpacked and mountaineered for a long time and my TNF stuff has never failed or let me down.

Viper,

The Barrier is awesome, but you are correct best for under 45 degrees. They have an ultralight jacket (I forget the name), and the PI Zephar is classic simple and works.
