As I was riding yesterday, I couldn't help but notice, along the roadside, that the first rains of Autumn had yielded the first green shoots of ...(checks notes)...Winter.
Yep, Californy is a strange place.

Did I ever tell you the story of the parents who, obviously non-native speakers, named their kid "Shi-theed" but spelled it ****head?? Poor kid.

Seriously. I don't think I've spent on an entire bike what a DA groupset goes for these days. Not even if you inflation-adjust what I paid for the Ritchey in 1997!

The rest is mostly Ultegra and some 105 mixed in. And at this point if I had to get a new groupset I would likely get Tiagra. Not joking.

Then there was the whole Jerry Penacoli gerbil thing. I met a couple of people who said they had friends who worked at the hospital where it all went down.

70's I think. I was friends with the local dealer so I usually got some good prices. My first motocross bike was a Maico 400. Great powerband and handling. But seriously had to almost rebuild it after every race. The kickstarter gear behind the clutch would fail many times. It was a bear to start when it did work. The shop owner ordered the brand new Yamaha YZ 360's when they first came out. They only came in a crate of two, so he sold me one for dealer price, $1600. (the first model without the monoshock). It had SO much power it was almost uncontrollable, and weighed 210 pounds.

You know that's an urban legend that comes from hospitals. Someone has a friend who is a nurse who worked at a hospital when a woman tried to name her baby that. I have heard it from someone at least once.
Then there was the whole Jerry Penacoli gerbil thing. I met a couple of people who said they had friends who worked at the hospital where it all went down.

So we sometimes call HER ME-ah-thede, to this day.

My one and only new road bike purchase was a Schwinn Passage, back in 95 or 96. $800, with extras. It was second from the bottom, and had brifters instead of downtube shifters. My one and only brifter bike. My one and only clipless pedal bike. It had spd. My one and only aluminum bike.

When we were young, my sister had a book about a family who had Labrador Retrievers. There was a litter, and one of the puppies looked out of proportion - his head was too big. So they named him "Meathead". My sister didn't read it as "Meat Head". She thought it was either "ME-ah-thede" or "me-ATH-e-Ad".
So we sometimes call HER ME-ah-thede, to this day.

I’m going to caveat this with I know it’s really bad, but when I was playing competitively (local am tournaments - not like weekend scrambles) I’d generally pop a benzo before teeing off and chase it with a beer. Much calmer nerves and lower scores

I've never had Dura-Ace but I bought the Gunnar new in 2006 with full Ultegra, Open Pro rims, and a CF Kestrel fork. About $2000 with the shop giving me a deal and they even assembled it. I think the frame was $700. In 2001 when I bought the CAAD5 it was a little cheaper similarly equipped. That frame was $600 with the fork.

We had a cat one time that hated my wife and would poop in her shoes and also on her side of the bed. Vet says it's not an uncommon thing for a cat to exhibit such behavior. We had 4-5 cats over the years and this is the only one that one of our cats that din't adore my wife.

Golf is great. I’ve played since I was a kid and always will. Having a family has made it much harder to carve out 5 hours (including travel) so I play much less than I want to.

The closest I got to golf was when my father in law took me to a driving range and scolded me for holding the club like a baseball bat. The only time I've held a club (besides miniature gold as a kid). Also, went to Montana for my brother in law's wedding in the Summer. In the evening, soon after the cake was outside, it was totally black, covered in bugs. I'll pass, also.
