Masters Misc Race Report Thread

Chuck - nice read. Seems you've learned a few things this year and will be stronger in the 4's for it next year. Looking at your feed it appears that you had a consistent effort from 45 minutes until the end at 2:09 which was higher than your ride yesterday
Setting a PR on the last outing should leave a good taste.
By the way - I'm a fan of neutralizing a race as soon as the earth turns uphill.

All - Thanks! Looking forward to morphing into a Fred for a while. This month's schedule includes a week off...not a week off the bike, just a week off. Going to do a few centuries in the next couple of months, and thin the herd somewhat to fund some upgrades.

Good job Chuck. Yep, always use momentum. Brakes are the Devil's instruments.
There is a lot of noise that you can hide behind in the big fields in the cats. Start pushing past 50 in the age groups and you're pretty naked. Miss a pedal stroke and you get slapped hard.
Huge respect for what you're doing. Same with Sara.

Fredistan is a bit more relaxed than Offthebackistan. Visas are much easier to get and tickets cheap.

A gal yelled at me on the first lap in the District Crit because I feathered my front brake in the first turn - I was drifting up into the peloton using momentum and I was going faster than the riders in front of me. "No brakes!" she said. "Okay, I'll ram the lady in front of me!" I said. That loosened things up a bit.

I love it when riders on the back yell at those in front of them. If you're so darn good get to the front and shut the heck up.

Thanks guys. here's what I wrote for my coach, I'm too tired to write a B.F. version.
Race - Masters Nationals RR MW 45-49 - 6th/19
This pretty much went as predicted. the initial climb was hard. I lined up in front and sat in the second row for the whole climb. I'm glad it wasn't any longer. On the descent, I managed to mostly stay in the group. at one point I got a shimmy and braked, but was able to chase back on before the turn onto the flat road around the res.
On the flat road, someone said we had dropped a few people and we should ride hard to keep them dropped. Seemed like a decent idea. I participated in the rotation for a few miles, then it became clear that there were only about 5 of us working and 10 or more sitting on, so I floated back and sat on too, for the most part. The rotation fell apart and we rode mostly strung out in the gutter away from the wind. We bunched up occasionally, but mostly it was pretty single file. There were a few attacks which I followed, but nothing got away. The second lap around the reservoir was a little more mellow, and was interrupted by a rolling neutralization for an ambulance passing the group.
I ate the 4 gus I was carrying, pretty evenly spaced, and tried to keep hydrated - thanks for the reminder, that helped.
At the base of the climb, we were pretty much all together. the pace heated up fast, and i knew it was a pace that would blow me up, so I just rode as hard as I could at a pace I thought I could sort of sustain. A pretty sizeable group rode away ahead of me, and a sizeable group was behind as well. I just ground it out as hard as I could. I passed a couple of people (K and B from <a boulder team>) and another right before the short descent (H). I lead H down the descent - it was cool that we could use the whole road - and then re-dropped her as the climb started up again. B re-caught me and I got on her wheel.
We could see 3 people ahead that we thought we might be able to catch. B lead the whole thing - I tried to come around to help her a couple of times, but only managed to do it once. There was a bit of a head wind. We passed one of the people pretty definitively. At about 1k to go we were reeling in the other two women, who were pretty close to each other and looked pretty cracked. We passed the first one at about 600meters to go, and were close to the other one. I had been thinking about how could I beat B, and I decided that I had enough to drill it to the end, and I wanted to make a move that B and the other gal would think was impossible to follow, rather than wait for a sprint. I was afraid B would turn it up and ride me off her wheel. So, i guess that doesn't make any sense in restrospect, but it worked - as we were about to pick off the last gal we could see, I moved all the way to the other side of the road and jumped hard, and held it as long as I could. It worked - I got a big gap on B immediately and it looked like neither of them even tried to reel me in. I faded pretty hard, but ended up well ahead of them.
As I crossed the line, they announced my name, and that I was 6th, I couldn't believe it!
I'm happy with how i raced, i wish I could have turned it up a little more, 5th place (and the podium) was just 45 seconds ahead... but I'm happy with what I did with the climb, I think if I had tried to hold the too-hard pace any longer i would have paid for it later, like B did.

I thought that's who that was. I figured the new team would teach her new things, but it appears not. She's strong, and it shows how far you have progressed by finishing ahead of her.

I'm glad I don't have to race against you. You're a monster, VG. Proud of you, woman!

My wife got a bronze medal in the individual time trial at Masters Road Nationals and her team Sisterhood of Cycling won the overall best team amassing the most points. 7 women from Sisterhood of Cycling participated and all contributed points such that if any one would not have contributed, the team would not have won.

Congrats to your wife Hermes!
I again just missed the podium in the crit, 6th. Happily missed the crash too. I raced against one of the sisterhood gals. Strong rider.
We had a 15 minute thunderstorm delay and the roads were soaking wet for my race. It made me nervous and I wasn't as aggressive in the corners as I needed to be.
