Here is a link to my newish winter bike. It's a 2017 Trek cross bike with Schwalbe Winter tires that I've been swapping with Bontrager CX0's as weather dictates. I can't say that I love winter riding but I love riding even in the winter.

Well, I finally did it! I spent the whopping $40 and bought fenders, something I have been putting off for three years! Why have I put it off? No clue!

Nice bike. How do you feel about the front fenders, do they work? When it is wet, I find that I get spray up into my face but most of the spray goes back towards the bottom bracket (and chain) so I prefer the downtube style fender.

Both made in Colorado with as much of each manufacturer's parts on them as I can get up to and including a Dean integrated handlebar

And they are as "American" as I can make them. Paul, White Industries, Phil Wood, Chris King, Velocity rims, etc.

I still have my CruX for the road and gravel, but I sold my alloy fat bike and bought a carbon one. It is a few lbs lighter and you can feel that 5 lb difference. The carbon frame is a lot stiffer than the alloy one as well. This one has a lighter frame but also lighter components. I put an ENVE carbon DH bar on it (800mm) and some Deity flat pedals though I use Frogs if the trails are really well packed. The 4.0 tires were taken off and some new ones put on (4.8F/4.6R) and converted to tubeless. I also installed studs in the rear tire since the Spring can be icy in several spots. Ice crashes are simply too fast to stop so the studs have already helped a lot...no crashes.

Thanks! Funny thing is my Talon looks almost exactly like the high end XTC of that year so I think people mistake me for riding a better bike then I do As for the fenders I had maybe ten minutes on them so far I was tired of the front flinging stuff up, today was the last straw as I was headed into a brisk wind and the tires were tossing slush straight up and into my face. They worked awesome though for that ten minutes, I was able to take the goggles off and even though the front seems long I never hit it with my foot.

I rode twenty-five miles of trails last Saturday, when Mother Nature gave us a preview of Spring.


My winter Barracuda has held up very well this year.


By Saturday, much of our snow had melted. Unfortunately, on Monday we got 3-6 more inches in blizzard conditions.


Trails in the city have been well-kept all winter.


Just look at all that dry pavement. Studded tires are overkill in these conditions, but you should hear that gnarly "crackling" noise as we ride along.


Hopefully soon I will stop posting to this thread and go back to showcasing my small herd of C&V steel. However, last night I flushed and re-lubed Barracuda's drivetrain. We're not out of the winter woods yet...

That's an old dirtbike thing. Riding motorbikes in the winter taught me that you need some healthy clearance between wheel and fender to prevent clogging with snow.

had a small issue with a rear fender (& derailer) recently so your clearance caught my eye. ultimately I don't think clearance was my issue, I think a stick flew into the chain, derailer & spokes, but honestly not 100% sure cuz whatever it was flew out & I never saw it. fender & fender stays bent back OK but had to replace the derailer

Fairly new to the winter bike forums, but figured to post what I usually ride during the summer and converted it into winter mode. Hoping the Schwalbe Marathon winters will be good enough to hit the trails when the white stuff comes.

As most of my rides end during the fall, I'll keep an eye on these forums and any tips you can provide me as to what to expect for winter rides (ie. clothes to wear, gear to pack, etc).

I use the same tires through Minnesota winters.






You'll want fenders though, unless you want salty slush to splash up onto your clothes.

They forecast a few days of snow...so put on the studs. "a few days" ended up being a morning and an afternoon....and so the studs only stayed on for a day before going back to file treads. Granted past 2 days have had 20F commutes.

This is my winter bike. It's heavy, the weight is on the rear, and it has wide tires and drum brakes.

Spent some time this past weekend putting away a number of bikes I don't need for the Canadian winter. The two chosen for winter use this year are the '16 Giant ATX dropbar conversion and the '17 Felt DD70 Fatbike. This will give me choices if the roads and streets are dry and the phattie for everything else. The cold but dry roads have allowed me out on the Giant this week.
