Yesterday I convinced Mrs. ascherer to take her first ride of the season following a prolonged recovery from rotator cuff surgery. It was also her first ride on the updated Grand Jubile mixte. 10 miles on the same trail as Saturday's ride. Looking forward to a good fall season with her. She needs a stem with less reach, so if anyone's got a 22/60 stem lying around, hit me up...

Grateful to post this thread
The weekend freeway closure (405) put a bit more traffic on our rural road. Funny as we are not the fastest way for the North - South drivers affected by the freeway disruption. Therefore, I focused on the road and forgot pics til I got home. Anyway, with all the fires a pic of my front yard seemed to best illustrate the situation out in western USA.
(yeah - typhoon headed toward San Diego and then north. Weird, just weird.
Campy9 RacingTriple on the Batavus. My only retro-mod. Gyes saddle w/ factory cutout.

Wow, that is some really dry soil there!
East coast, as I have been saying the past few years, is a subtropical, lean tropical climate now and summer is a constant battle of keeping greenery from completely over growing everything. At any rate we have had a very nice couple of days and I got out this AM for 30 miles in southern Albemarle County. My legs and back were pretty sore from a first time in 3 years pickup basketball game yesterday with a bunch of high schoolers (recently re-upped at the Y after 3 year pandemic hiatus) so I opted to keep the miles lower and drive out to start of a flattish route. Only 1600 feet climbing! The southern half of my route took me alongside, but out of view, of the James River. I took a side trip down to the river to get a look but it was jam packed with tubers (people floating, not potatoes) wearing fewer clothes than I would consider aesthetically pleasing for that crowd so no pics of that.
Esmont Farm - the house, tucked behind trees to the left, built in early 1800’s.
Just outside Scottsville, looking West. Maybe the Blue Ridge in the far distance but I think more likely the ridge guarding the east side of Rockfish Valley .

Today was beautiful day for riding through Ulster and Greene counties. Peak August. Took the PX10.
A bit more than a dozen miles in my route heads east, away from the Catskill Escarpment seen in the background into right proper farmland. This is a large egg operation among the cornfields.
Corn is as high as…
One of many little barns along the way. Most farms around here are small scale family operations.
Noticed this fellow sunning next to a wetlands pond at about the midpoint.
Only about 5 miles from home, the Blue Mountain Reformed Church offered a shady spot for a quick drink before the final climbs home.
37 miles in all, a splendid ride.

Another 20 today in the Ashokan rail trail with Mrs. ascherer.
Going at a party pace, I picked up a hitchhiker for a few miles.

Nice weather today a bit warm for the mountains in the low 80's took the Marin for just a short local ride on some back roads and the bike trail.
Even with the record rain this Spring and Summer things are starting to get really dry after only a few days of warm dry weather.
Several people have asked about the white cross monument along the bike trail. It is for Marcus W. Shirley no clue who he was. Thought I would take pic.

Today I had to change plans. Was supposed to be another 50 miler but it rained overnight and then the humidity stayed way too high all morning. I'm spoiled by our normal dry conditions and just did not want to go out in such humid air, So during the morning I took care of chores but also messed with the 90's Merlin Road bike I picked up yesterday. This morning I swapped on a Thomson Seatpost and a longer Zipp stem. Around noon I finally went out for what I figured would be a lazy ten miles or so test of this bike. Instead I wound up staying out for almost 33 miles. I must say this bike rides better than the new Lynskey I had years ago. The Lynskey would get bouncy in the rear on undulating surfaces and I hated that. Took this Merlin over the same rough roads that would upset the Lynskey and this one just sailed through them, smooth and solid. Just what I was hoping for. Late in the ride I punched it up to 35 mph without really having to try hard. Was still accelerating when I got to thinking that I hadn't looked the old carbon fork over that well so I eased off. Later on I got into the drops and ran a couple of miles in the mid 20 mph range and the bike just cruised along without seeming to need much effort to keep the speed going. The only real issue I had is the chain slipping some when on the small chainring. It has a Deore RD with a long cage on it for some reason and something is not right. Not to mention gear shifts are a bit lazy in both directions. But going up one steep short climb the chain jammed as I dropped to the small ring. I unclipped my right leg and got my foot down but the recently repaired leg leg was stuck in a very awkward position. Could not unclip it so I had to loosen and slip out of the shoe, LOL! Anyway a bit gloomy and damp but at least it was that hot. This ride put me at 226 miles for the week. Respectable distance but my pace is still down.
Anyway, a few pics today. Bad time and weather for good pics. Of course I did grab several of the new ride.
Swapped on some old Fulcrum Racing 1 wheels with GP 5000 tires, Thomson seatpost, Zipp stem, Look Keo Pedals, Avocet O2 saddle and a bottle cage to drop the weight to 17 lbs, 13 ozs.
Mostly 9 Speed Dura Ace parts on this one now.
SLK Compact Crankset
Backside of the Blacksmith Shop in Eden
I took a rough seasonal dirt road up into the next mountain valley to pick up the Merlin. That pass cuts over those mountains in the background.
Liberty
You can see the steep North Ogden Divide Road in this shot. It's the cut in the mountain to the left.

Did about 15-ish miles on the greenway downtown by the Cumberland River on Saturday. It was hot, but I rewarded myself with a a couple delicious beers at the end.
Really hard to get out there during the height of summer since it's not really tolerable outside until after sundown.

I accessorized my G.J. yesterday so I could ride to work in the hurricane. But they cancelled school. Oh well. 15 miles out and back to see if I have heel clearance and if there are any rattles. Yes and No.
This is the way I remember Snow Days -- Playtime.
Saying goodbye to Hurricane Hillary.

What kind of wind-speed did you get? Did those bags make it any tougher?

I cheated on my wife tonight. Took Bob out for trailside pizza and beer. He's such a smooth talker, I couldn't say no.

I rode 16 miles this morning with the missus before noon.
Temps steadily rise in the afternoon. Weather app shows a104 degree high today. I do not enjoy riding when it's that hot.
After 2 weeks gone to cooler mountain areas I did not miss this heat one bit but it is what it is.
Today's ride was on my Bridgestone CB-0.
I picked it because it was closest to the front of my garage and I hadn't ridden any of my bikes in two weeks while on vacation in Colorado and New Mexico.
(For those 2 weeks I used borrowed bikes.)
Something very unusual happened about mid ride.
We were on a familiar bike path riding along at about 12 to 14 mph when from the side of the path near a creek a critter shot out right in front on me.
I hit the brakes but still ran over it.
The Bridgestone is a very stable bike with fat tires and I didn't lose control at all but just rolled right over with the front tire but swerved enough to miss with the rear .
I was concerned I really hurt the what I guess was a juvenile size armored critter which is a bit of an icon in Texas and I guess a few other southern or southwestern states, maybe other states as well but I did not look it up.
(An armadillo!!!)
I on rare occasion see one here or there in my travels
(most often road kill) but not often.
However here in the northern burbs of Dallas one zips in front of me and I roll over it on my first ride since returning yesterday.
What are the odds?
My wife was behind me and asked what it was?
I turned around to check on it and it was temporarily stunned.
In the time it took me to pull my phone from my pocket and hit the camera app it had started back across the road toward the creek.
I only got off one snap before it disappeared into the brush near the creek.
I'm hoping no permanent injury was caused to the critter.
They are known for quickly curling into a protective ball when danger is near.
At any rate I would think this occurrence of rolling over an armadillo will never happen to me again the rest of my cycling life.
Now squirrels, that's a different matter down here.
They are numerous and everywhere and very irratic.
Here's the only pic I got of the armadillo and also a pic of my CB Zip.
Safe riding to you all.

A rare midweek outing today, 39 mile hilly loop from home on the Mercian. Thought I’d try to share a video clip for a change.

Took my 77 Romic up Snowbowl Rd in northern arizona this morning--a great climb, but dang that road needs to be resurfaced soon. This is one of two bikes I'm debating bringing to Eroica this year (with different wheels, of course)
