Wrap some aluminium window screen around the caliper. Mabe a rubber band to hold in place.

I did some more mockups and tried one screen, which worked ok. Sorry no pics, basically just a simple shield on the front of the caliper. Then of course I worried during the ride that it'd come off and get pulled into the caliper/rotor/spokes. Suppose after a few more rides, I'll either remove it or get confident with it. If it stays on and works, I'll grab photos.
