The crap landed on my doorstep today.

My "haul". The partial front derailleur is going into the scrap metal bin to make room for the hopefully better crap I added to the box. I think I added the Huret spoke protector to the box a long time ago. All that's happened is it's slowly gotten damaged. I'll give it to my friend Billy for his ginormous stash. I think he has a Huret Jubilee-equipped Raleigh. Hopefully he can use it there. The allen keys will sit my workstand's wrench try, trying to attract the Park foldable set I usually keep there back from wherever they've gotten to recently.

I do have one request. I know people like restomods, but can we maybe keep stuff like external bottom brackets out of the BoC? Maybe just limit the contents to obviously vintage stuff? Thanks...

I have no idea what kind of bars work with those levers. I just don't think I've ever seen brake levers with a bend like that, and if that bend is meant to work with porteur bars, that could explain it.

Not yet. I only recently (within the past couple months) acquired some tubing to create the proposed patch. I still don't have a good way to turn the necessary sleeves (no lathe). I also need to pin the one seatstay. I might have to scrounge up a smallish square nail for that. The only ones I've ever come across (you know, for free, not purchased from McMaster-Carr or other big outfit) are big 'uns, salvaged from old framing lumber. Here's the current state of the frame. I also need to do a big more sanding to avoid generating noxious fumes...

From what I hear, this cargo ship of a box will be making its way to the universal 'cargo ship' docking station (aka home of the Huffy's, aka Le Grande HQ).

In a battle for the 'heavies', the Box o' Crap may finally have met its match.

I will do comparison weights between a recent pickup (Huffy related) and the Box o' Crap. Would a Huffy be found lacking (girth)? The Battle of Behemoths (box or bike?) will begin soon!

The crap is in the mail, on its way to Colorado! I played a little Tetris and I think I was able to squeeze in more than I took out.

Well, imagine my surprise when we got a small earthquake tonight. Super rare, since Colorado is not near any fault lines. Then I turn on the news,
and realize the epicenter is my house. The Box o’ Crap! It hath arrived!





I decide to be fashionable and meet planetary mass with planetary mass (i.e. bring the Huffente to pick it up). Well, that was just about the dumbest thing ever since the box is super heavy and I’ve got other mail to get and there is zero logical way I’m riding the bike with the box under my arm and it’s super awkward and precarious on the seat.



Nevertheless, we make it home (about 50 ft) with nary a disaster. I shall be tearing into it tonight.

So many projects! The Crapamount! The Jungle Junker Allez! The Ted Williams! Some other unmentionables!

Let the fun begin!


Also, I got those lovely acorn nuts from Mad Honk this evening as well, and just so you all don’t think I only dabble in the doo doo, here is what they will be going on -





It’s a bit of a hot mess right now, but a lovely ‘79 Trek 938 that will be getting rebuilt with the full Nuovo Record treatment. I know. How dare I spend time on so nice a bike. Don’t worry, I plan to make up for it.

I have rifled through it a bit, and one immediate take was this lovely guy…




Reason I’m so excited about this one is that it is a .833 diameter, and finding slightly longer stems with that ‘Huffy’ diameter is tough; they don’t grow on trees. It is an 80mm, which may not be considered ‘long’ to many, but it sure is longer than the 50mm-or-so Jun stem on the Huffente, which will go a long way to not having the cockpit feel cramped. I’m pretty sure that the bar clamp diameter is smaller than the bars, but that is how it was on the Jun as well, and a problem easily solved. There is plenty enough meat on that stem to open it up without fear of compromising the integrity. I had thought about doing that with a stem of 22.2 diameter - you know, carve it down to fit, but didn’t really want to tempt fate.

Thank you to whomever threw this in! I don’t know if 80mm is the ideal length for the Huffente, but I’m excited to try it!

You're welcome! I think that came off another Huffy and I thought it took a standard 25.4 handlebar. It was otherwise identical to the other SR Custom stems in the bin, so I marked it with a piece of tape so I wouldn't mix them up.

I fit even more into the box - @rustystrings61 is sure going to have a fun time unboxing it, and even more fun getting it back in.

I took out some not-as-interesting things, and put in some slightly-more-interesting things. I replaced some steel with aluminum, and some aluminum with steel, in all the good ways.

Believe it or not, it weighs even more now, both literally and figuratively (one day we'll know why). I would say it's mass tonnage rivals just about any Huffy! (okay, the Huffy still wins, but it was sweating!)





Great, now the warranty on my floor is voided!


The real question is…who can beat 29.8lbs? I sense a new challenge looming in the horizon…
