Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

They are both pretty resourceful, and know how to do well in cold weather.

Day 6 on the road. Never again, this is way too long to be still working. I’m a beginning to forget what my house looked like.

I read yesterday that there is a monument to the Immaculate Reception on the Point, in the location where it happened, where Three Rivers Stadium used to be. Gives me warm feelings about the place.

I confess, it makes me feel really old when I realize that I am old enough to remember when Three Rivers opened, and it's now been gone for more than two decades.

Our family story about Three Rivers is that somehow, my Grandfather, who played professional baseball in the 'Teens, and then umpired in and around Pittsburgh for 57 years, managed to finagle his way into Bowie Kuehn's box at the opening in 1970. We have a picture from the event, Pap with Kuehn, all smiles, from that day.

Well, riding a tri/TT bike is a skill, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised there’s a version with training wheels…

I've seen videos of them racing on these things, don't know how they do it. The guy at our rides didn't try to corner fast and I don't remember him doing long climbing rides with us but he was out there several times on our short rides and he did bring another trike rider out once. They don't really fit in with a group of road bikes.

A friend who rode recumbents for many years, even raced at the velodrome on one, decided to get an e-trike. The kind with 2 small-ish wheels in the front and pretty low. I last rode with him on New Years Day and I can't see the front wheel if he's beside me unless I turn and look down. He likes to talk and he's fun to talk to but I kept thinking I was going to hit his front wheel with my pedal. I had no sense of where he was like when next to another road bike and I could not get comfortable with it.

I would imagine that cornering is not its strong suit.

Tomorrow we are supposed to go from the 50s to the teens in a matter of hours. Because it's still going to be wet, they are worried about a flash freeze on roads and sidewalks. Single digit windchills Saturday. I have a big bag of snow melt left over from last winter. Winds could gust up to 60 mph, causing the chance of down wires from broken tree limbs. My batteries are charged. Between all that and the holiday, grocery stores are very crowded. Can't wait to see the lines at Total Wine on my way home.

Yeah my staff are all worried about their drive home tomorrow because of expectations of ice.

Stupid winter.
