Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Move to Buffalo. That's a great idea.

At least 16 dead from blizzard in Buffalo as nation starts to dig out (msn.com)

Back in September, we replaced our aging ones with 9v batteries with brand-spankin'-new fancy Lithium battery ones, good for 10 years. One month later, one of the starts going off and won't stop. I had to push the 'permanently deactivate' switch. I looked it up online. People were saying they had to buy 6 to get 3 that didn't go off randomly. We'd put up 2, so I thought, "Well, maybe we're okay now." Nope.

I know they save lives, but cripes!

20° with light winds so I thought I might go out but when I got ready to leave, I see that It had dusted over the couple hours that I had been downstairs in my work room. Looks like trainer again.

We have 5 upstairs that are all within about a 4' radius of each other. There have been plenty of times I've stood under them at 3:00 in the morning waiting for them to beep so I could try to figure out which one was the culprit.

When I lived in Needles mine kept low battery beeping randomly. I would put new batteries in it and a couple days later it would beep again. I ended up flipping out one night and ripping the batteries out. Went back to sleep and it starts beeping again. I rip it off the wall and throw it in the corner, starts beeping again. My apartment was on the edge of the desert, i opened my window and chucked it as far out as I could. In the morning when I got in my car for work I could still hear it beeping.

I read - on the official First Alert site - that after you deactivate them, they might continue chirping for up to 48 hours. Does that sound like "deactivated"?

Indoor pool in your home?

House behind us has an indoor pool. Seems like it would create a lot of humidity and potential for mold.

Ours sees no use from September to May. No polar bears here either. I have had to stick my hands and arms into the water in the winter for various reasons, and that is as far as I want to go. And, quite frankly, I don't want to go that far.

Carry on only! I know you can't do that with a car seat though.

We went to Italy for 2 weeks a while back, and I told my wife and daughter that we were not checking bags. My son was fine with that. The women survived.

I wish, but have the same thoughts that you do - mold/mildew central. My gym has two outdoor pools and they cover one of them with a dome that’s heated (think the old Metrodome) and connect it to the main building. They do a really good job maintaining it.

;Never again. I told my wife we can buy some diapers and other items when we got to Tampa but she insisted on packing everything in the house. She’s seeing the light now.

My crew bag got lost once when I worked for the old airline. I was on my way to work, and my boss wanted me to still go without my bag……. 4 days is a long time to go on one pair of underwear.

I have a massive rant about smoke detectors. They are literally user-hostile under the excuse of "importance", when it should be the opposite. I'd literally rather live without, given then legal choice.

Figured I was the only swimmer here. Heavily lapsed, though, since ending triathlon.

There's a house in Boulder with an indoor lap lane; was $5mn as I recall, though close to the height of the market. In Texas we'd be fine with an outdoor lap lane. Just don't want a stupid "resort" pool.

When my daughter was younger (mid-teens), she wanted to take 11 pairs of shoes on a 4-day trip. We had a discussion.

When the kids were young and we started traveling internationally with them (ages 5 and 7 at the time), we told them that they could take what would fit into one suitcase and a backpack. It was funny to see them walking through the airport dragging their suitcase and having stuffed animals and toys sticking out of the backpacks.

What is a "resort" pool?

Love our pool. it is used solely for hanging out, floating, and drinking. Very refreshing in the summer.

I recommend multi symptom cold meds. At least you can feel alive on the edges of the sickness. And, best of all, you can breathe well enough to sleep. Get well soon

pretty limited on what I can take. I wish I could use nyquil but that not allowed, as well as majority of the liquid medications . I can take sudafed and tyenol cold and flu, that’s about it.
