Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I Shaved My Legs!!!.....and I Like It!!!

Greetings all!!
I've been riding for years, but never felt it necessary to shave the legs. Being a stubbornly independant sort, I swore there was no way I would bow to the cycling subculture just to be seen as one of them. A funny thing happened, though. Three weeks ago I signed up for the Housatonic Hills Road Race in Southbury, CT. (6/18/06), and purchased my first USCF Racing License. For some strange reason, these two acts caused my 43 years young mind to start contemplating the dreaded "S" word. How, or why, I just don't know....Anyway, one evening before getting into the shower last week, I suddenly found myself holding my electric razor in my hands, and staring at my hairy legs. Next thing I know, I'm shearing all the hair from my right leg......AM I MAD????!!!!......Next, I find myself staring at my clean shaven legs as waves of mixed feelings (I must be nuts, my wife and kids might have me comitted, have I finally given up my independance?, dread, shame, wonder....you name it, I felt it.) whizzed through my mind.......Due to bad weather, I wasn't able to ride with my "NEW" legs until yesterday. As I flew through the 45.3 hilly miles, I found myself feeling different. As funny as it may sound, I felt I had now fully arrived as a cyclist. I felt I had now fully committed to the sport I have grown to love. Call it a "right of passage" if you like, because that's what it feels like. The "vanity" argument also holds true. With each day, I find I like the "clean" look even more. I find myslelf wondering at the well-defined cycling muscles that were somewhat obscured by the hairiness. If anything, the psychological boost I am now feeling should only help me going into my race..........I'm not suggesting to anyone that they should go right out and shave their legs (it is a truly individual decision), I will only say that, for me, I wish I had done it sooner.

P.S: My family has NOT had me comitted. In fact, they have been rather supportive. Also, I only use an electric razor, so I haven't had any problem with razor burn, itch, or ingrown hairs as of yet.

I have you guys owned, though, because I've been shaving my face since I was 13 and I've been shaving my legs since I was 16.

Good for you, but sounds like your brain stopped developing since when you are 13 too.

Well, prepare for imminent pwn3age, my fine friend, because I've been shaving my face since 13 and my legs since *15*, in addition to ...

... at the age of 12, ritualistically shaving my testicles. /DrEvil

In all honesty, with me it's not about riding with shaved legs. I think I've moved beyond that, it's more about a more clean feeling all over my body. From the neck down I really can't stand hair anymore. I was a pretty hairy guy (except my back) but now that I trim/shave from the neck down I feel better.

I don't shave my arms (I trim them really close) I don't shave my underarms, but also trim them with the clippers as well as my chest. Everything else is shaved either with a razor or mostly with the electric razor for convenience.

Just my .00125 cents

Too much childish banter. Maybe a 21 and older age limit on this thread should be mandated.

I shaved my with the advice of my buddy Lowcel. I wanted to weigh 160 before I did. I couldnt wait, I shaved them at 176 pounds. Down from 210, I wanted to cross over and dedicate myself to this sport for my health.

Its been a little over a week, I feel good, they look pretty good too. However, I have not gotten "the stare" until last night. It was a little uncomfortable too.

My family went to Kick off of vacation bible school last night. We are newcomers to this particular church. We were standing in line and behind my Oakley Eyejackets, I noticed the lady in front of me looking at my legs while I was acting as if I was looking the other way (Im good at that with my glasses on hehe) and it felt kind of funny.

I dont feel yet like I look like a cyclist. Im still a little thick up top, and have some skinny legs. I look like a mountain biker if anything.

Nonetheless, Im ok with it, they look good, I feel ok with it so its all good.

I know at some point there was some kind of actual reason for shaving that was cycling related--what was it again?

I too have had these moments of temptation after a few Cat 5 races, but I have yet to take the plunge... Is it something in the water they pass out at races?

I shaved my legs,
'Cause I went to race.
Now my legs are so white,
You can see them from space.

I shaved mine (an event referred to in my house as "The Bloodening") back in April and they are finally starting to get some color.

It's just cleaner and better. That's what I tell myself anyway.
