Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

After my ride, I did my husbandly duty and assembled an outdoor IKEA table. It took way longer than it should have due to some mis-aligned holes I had to redrill a few mm.

It’s no bench, but mrs datlas is pleased.

Not a bench pic, but a couch pic that I posted several years ago. Even Botto approved of this one:

I could post a pic of the bench that my wife and I have in place for a gravestone but that would be morbid. It is pretty, though, and has the Irish blessing engraved on it: "May the road rise to meet you..." with a pic of a winding road.

Like I say, sort of morbid since it's near the roadway and I ride by on my bike a few times a week.

Is your backyard wooded? That would answer the age-old burning question.

I dunno, man. Whenever I hear that one, I picture the road rising to meet my body and face in unpleasant ways....

I have been a vegetarian for 38 years.

Personally, I have low interest in “fake” meat products and prefer ones that taste good to me.

I do understand why some vegetarians might want to try these products, whether it be curiosity or nostalgia. I suspect they have more appeal to recent/nouveau vegetarians.

My wife is not vegan but recoils at the smell and sight of cooking meat. She only eats disguised meat like in spaghetti sauce if it's chopped fine. if it's cubed, she picks it out. She has no trouble with fish or seafood.

I don't think it's a personal thing. I find it an interesting question of personal aesthetics and philosophy.

Not eating meat substitutes is not inherent in veganism. Lots of vegans eat "fake meat" in various forms and don't feel any aesthetic or philosophical reason to avoid it. I wonder how much of it has to do with when they made the switch, or if it was even a switch - that is, if you were raised vegan and never ate a burger, you might find no particular reason to want a burger, whereas if you grew up eating meat and then went vegan later, you might be drawn to fake burgers.

True confession: when Burger King came out with its “Impossible Whopper” about 5 years ago, mrs datlas and I had a BK date to try it. It was ok but I have not gone back and don’t plan to in the future.

What, you mean the trees? (animals have fur)

(I assume you're referring to the old joke about the bear who's answering the age-old question when a rabbit comes hopping by?)
