Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Speaking of sleep: I seem to be entering a phase of sleeping through the night, without having to get up and pee. I don't think it's dehydration though. Just good fortune. My wild dreams, however, continue. Last night I was doing a social ride, and generally hanging out, with Peter Sagan.

It’s a little hard to stay in the effort at that point and I’m not that happy with how I raced. But whatever. Won the thing which was my only real goal on a bike this year.
Outstanding!

Wait . . . I thought for most people the exhilaration coming down was what made the pain going up worthwhile. Glad I never listened to you people, I have always avoided unnecessary climbing.

I'll never have that problem.

That's a bummer, though.

We have had this problem in the past. Even a metal door isn't exactly light without the spring to help you. The repair isn't that difficult once they have the correct spring in hand.

A teammate won the men’s 35-39 race. My TT women friends, the four of us who race all the local TTs, all won our races- the 45-49, 50-54 (me), 55-59 and women’s cat 4 (the woman who won this one is 57, but the cat 4 distance is 40k whereas the 50-59 is 17k and she wanted to race the longer distance).

I have two more races this week- a 5k and a 10k TT, qualifiers for next year’s National Senior Games. Then: heading to Big Bear to ride mountain bikes. Im thinking of try to do this fondo in Sept. The 50k route. Big Bear Gran Fondo 50k Skyline Right now it would be an achievement for me to just ride this route, period. Let alone do it fast.

Kudos.

It was an interesting climb. Visually it's hard to gauge how steep it is, as it's mostly straight so you spend the whole climb looking up the grade and not doubling back on yourself to see the slope behind you, kinda plays tricks on your mind and I kept finding myself surprised that I was in my smallest gear combo on what "looked" like maybe 4% but was actually triple that. It's also a good length for a ~25-30 minute interval, since it pretty much forces you to ride at your threshold, so I did it a couple times while there.

The descent was not fun, tbh. That Giant had discs but the brake lever would go "long" and I'd have to pump them to get a better feel on them. Combine that with an unfamiliar road surface and some very strong wind gusts and I found myself riding the brakes pretty hard most of the way down.

Had another daybreak ride today, right after the storm came through at 6:15AM today. Roads were wet so my bike and I got dirty and messy, but it was still good.

This week I got in 4 good rides (because Memorial Day) and I have a shot of staying on the podium.

Live and learn. Apparently Strava doesn't work without a Sim card installed. The old one is too big so I need to go to the city tomorrow and get a new one.
On the upside, I find that yet another addiction really isn't.

I would imagine that it recorded, but you'll just need the sim to upload. Phones often rely on cell towers to assist with GPS, but they're not reliant upon them.

All that climbing is paying dividends.

P.S. What happened to the mountain goat?

Not sure, tbh. It was a weird setup... the brake levers had mechanical cables that ran into a sort of junction box built into the stem faceplate, and from there thicker cables, presumably with hydro fluid, ran to the actual brake calipers. I've never ridden a disc road bike so I don't know if that's a normal setup or what.

Edit: This thing-

https://www.giant-bicycles.com/global/showcase/conduct

Guess it's a unique to Giant setup, so I'm not sure if the "fade" feeling is something to do with that particular bike's setup or if it's normal for that system.

Oh yeah - that's the Giant Conduct or Connect or some ****. Yeah, mech levers with a hydro converter on the stem faceplate. They slapped those on a lot more of their 2018 bikes, which was disappointing. Still sounds like a bleeding problem, though, unless you were storing it upside down or on end or something (but usually pumping at the start of the ride alleviates that and it's no longer an issue afterwards).

This is the kind of crazy debauchery I get up to when AG is gone:

https://www.strava.com/activities/1614839022 (19 PRs, and the fastest 40k my watch has seen)
https://www.strava.com/activities/1614978619 (4 mile brick run that ripped out what was left of my soul)

Now I kind of feel like vomiting.

I couldn't even get it started, so I left the phone at home. It wouldn't acknowledge that location history was turned on.
