Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

*sigh* Staunch anti-vaxxer in our NJ office, who lives with his mom, who also works in our NJ office, attends a baby shower for another employee yesterday in a crowded conference room and tests positive today. Mom attended the shower and is now feeling ill.

I was originally scheduled to be in the NJ office yesterday but ended up working from home.

On day 6 of hives and allergic skin reaction to god knows what. Super good time!

called my pcp and the advice was to change from Benadryl to Claritin 2x daily along with finishing my roids and taking Pepcid every day. If it’s not better by January I should go in…

Last night I got on Zwift, did my warmup and spindown calibration, then started looking on the Companion App for Events. I found a race I hadn't done - "3R Tempus Fugit Flat Race", which is 2 laps of Tempus Fugit, a really flat route in Watopia. 23 miles. I wasn't sure whether I felt like racing, or should have just gone for an easy spin, but I thought, "What the hell? I can always just let myself fall off the back if I don't feel up to it."

Most other races only allow you to see the racers in your own category, but in this one EVERYONE was visible. So, after the usual fast start, where I restrained myself from chasing down all the Ds who'd gone off the front of our group, I settled intoa group of about 10 racers, some Ds and some Cs, and we soon swept them up. Then we stayed together for the rest of the race, much as you can see in this pic, where I'm the big guy in blue, in the second row.

I spent the whole race concentrating on never being first wheel, but also never getting gapped off the group. It was basically an hour of tempo with occasional minor match-burnings. When we got to the last mile, the pace picked up and the group strung out, but I'd already decided which other riders to mark. That guy flagged above "Mikey P", especially, since I'd lost to him in the final sprint of another race. Well, I gave the final sprint everything I had left, so much so that I had to stop pedalling half a second before I crossed the line, but it didn't matter, since I lost to Mikey P by 1 second but beat the guy in 3rd by 1 second. So, 2nd, in a race with at least 8 other riders in D. Not too shabby!

I thought a couple times about trying to do a breakaway, but every time someone else did, they always got reeled in. Seemed pointless. I just wish I'd had more sprint left - Mikey P had a 12W/kg sprint still in him at the end but I only just managed 6W/kg. I guess that's what I need to work on - still having a good sprint left after an hour of tempo.

Anyway, it was fun, it was hard work, and it burned off some of the chocolate I'd eaten.

So, I thought I'd try a bigger cassette on my Propel today which is also currently on my Kickr. I dug a brand new 11 speed cassette out of inventory and installed it on the Kickr. Quick check of the chain shows >0.75. Oops. wonder when I last replaced my chain It turns out that the chain has been on there since some time in 2019 so I get a new chain out of storage and install it on my Propel. New chain and new cassette - good to go. A quick test and there is a rumble in bottom half of the gears that I can feel through the pedals. I check the crank (16,000 miles) and sure enough, the teeth are shot on both the big and small rings. Back to inventory and find some used but decent looking rings and install them. Now, it's time to ride, 2 hours later and a couple sc***** knuckles.

I just checked the longest-serving chains - the Canyon and Bianchi, and they're both fine Everything else is <1000 miles.

Okay, OCD sufferers - if the logos on the top cap of your stem are bilaterally symmetrical, do you place them at 12:00 and 6:00 or 3:00 and 9:00?
