Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

speaking the gulf coast, I have a former report at work that left recently to attend Rice University (Houston), at a pretty prestigious/impactful chemistry research group. According to her, the weather sucks, but there are some redeeming aspects to the geography there (both cultural and physical). And she's from San Diego too, so that's saying something.

Lester, don't you think that's somewhat rude? BF has members from those states and you just implied they are rednecks.

The spam in general has gone from call girls to loans. I suppose this is a natural progression.

I've had car batteries last 10 years fairly often. Six and a half years, so far, on the SportWagen battery.

Doctor Google sez 3 years is average lifespan for batteries in Florida. Another reason not to live there.

And now they're here in Road Cycling. Oh, joy. Maybe I can get a loan so I can pay for my call girl in Dubai. I'll ask my psychic.

The first two batteries in the Fit died very quickly. The first was OEM, and the second Autozone. Autozon’s warranty kicked in and saved us a pile of money, and this third one is doing much better. The rationale says that there is so much background stuff going on in today’s cars, that if they don’t get driven enough, that background stuff kills the battery. After the second one went I looked at this solar topper uppers but never pulled the trigger.

Like I say, it's a good reason not to live there. The one time we visited Mrs. GJ's Dad in Pompano Beach, it was April and the weather was surprisingly pleasant. Turns out it was unseasonably pleasant, and our last day the NORMAL April weather hit. Bleah.

This is not true. You can check for a parasitic draw with an ammeter. It's recommended to be less than 50ma. When I have checked cars it's typically less than 20ma.
Of course if you don't drive it for a month it may go down.
Part of the issue is the reduction of weight in batteries. Also, quality control can be worse than years ago. And luck is involved.

Our cars each have 5ish year old batteries and Mrs rarely starts her car. I had a cheap Wal Mart battery for 8 years in a truck I sold.

Nice ride today with just one other rider. We both wanted to take it easy so we didn't do much climbing but ended the ride with about an hour of headwind.
