Removing the pin from a modern chain (to differentiate from physically “breaking” a chain) is relatively easy with larger chain tools because you generally aren’t limited by leverage. The peened pins of modern chains do offer more resistance to removal than older, unpeened chains. The peen comes off as a ring that is usually stuck to the push pin on the chain tool like these




It’s harder to break that peen off with a small emergency tool.
