Nice job @papik! Great pic of your Gitane atop the Beast of Provence. Did you climb from Bedoin?

Wow, it hurts even to think about it. You were also hauling some extra kilos, by the looks of it.

BTW, I like that green bar tape on your Gitane so much I've just ordered some green cotton for my own '76-ish Racing Team.

Thanks Gaucho777 , yes, we have climb from Bedoin ; last year, I have climb it from Sault with my PEUGEOT "competition 7000" and I can say that from Bedoin is more dificult, because we immediatly climb with a 10% slope , with the GITANE TDF, I was with 30 x 24 during all the climb ! on the picture, it is 1 kilometer to the summit and I am realy exhausted ...from Bedoin, we have a 19 kms climb ...

This is a stock picture from the catalog. My 1979 PXN10LE got stolen from me only months after I bought it new, with my hard-earned summer job money. I'm still a little sad about it.

Papik,

Awesome!

You should post your pictures and adventures on the GitaneUSA.com website. You have to become a member but it's free and we have a lot of member from France.

That is a very nice frame in a perfect size for me, and I would probably have built it up exactly the same way. Love it!

After the "Chalet Reynard", it is a mineral desert ... , no grass, no tree, only white stones and in winter, snow...
A picture of Tom Simpson 's memorial, we can see the famous stones.

I know that it is a 1988 because of the italicized lettering of the "PEUGEOT" main decal. The rear and front mech are exactly the same, as are the fenders and racks. The front lamp style is slightly different. I have speculated that my bike is a german market Peugeot, ( that somehow got all the way to Las Vegas ) that I have been calling a PH8 variant. I do believe I got this notion from a sale on ebay, that had a photograph of the serial number tag. I see that you also have this tag photographed, and your tag clearly says P8. Mine is a 10 speed ( two front rings ), and it has a very long top tube. Yours appears not to have this long frame. I currently see a later post where someone with a bike looking very much like yours, and mine and yet it is very different. ( Savoie ) I think the mystery of mine lies in that it is a German Market bike? Obviously, I do not have a paper serial tag to identify the bike. I can see where the tag lived previously on the frame. I will tell you honestly, I love this burgundy tour bike. I have several road Peugeots from the 80's and this one surprised me at every turn. It is deceptively fast. I get amazing leverage from the long frame. I put a tiny 80s itallian saddle ( not touring )on it for kicks, and I even fell in love with that! Las Vegas had a strangler of a rain storm the other night, and since I had not yet given this Peugeot a proper cleaning yet, I went out and rode thru the storm... WAY COOL. ( i did use an air compressor on it afterwards, and reapplied a heaping of lubricant afterwards. My bike looks just like yours, but that top tube thing looks more like the guy with the "savoie" ID post. That is all for now.
Your Peugeot sounds like a sharp bike, Luckywrench! Yes, mine was an absolute bargain and a great introduction to French bikes. I still have it, although my main commuting bike nowadays is a 12-speed Schwinn Voyageur 11.8.

Mine is a 63, too, Jeirvine. But it doesn't look anything like that. Yet. Working up the nerve to strip it and paint it this Fall.
Beautiful example.

Took out the Lejeune on a ride and it felt pretty good, seemed lighter than it was, I just have to get a leather seat, frame pump and a handlebar mounted water bottle set up.

1970s Motobecane Nomade with steel rims(non-quick release):

I have a set of alloy wheels set aside for it but the bike is usually attached to a bike trainer in front of the tv downstairs, and it's easier to connect the rear rim to the trainer with the steel wheel's traditional axle and axle nuts setup.

Rootboy, thank you for mentioning the Lejeune, as much as I love higher end bikes some of the entry level ones are surprisingly lively feeling and look pretty decent. I have to confess to wanting to own a Motobecane Grand Record or Jubilee in black with the red accents, one of the most tastefully conceived color combinations of any bike. Outside of some of the early 1960's Legnanos, Frejus, Bianchis and even the odd Carlton or Raleigh there are not too many main stream marques that look so good.

Kind of nice to see a Lejeune in something other than red.

Along with WNG's upcoming views from Hurricane Ridge, two of the most iconic and splendid views in America, on opposite sides of the continent. Beautiful.
I really like that crank on that bike too.

I agree with CV-6. Great color. Would like to see larger pics of that green beauty. And I agree with the color combo of the early 70 Motos. It seems the black with red accents is an all-time favorite of many here, including myself. Saying that, I'm very hesitant to tell what I have in mind for my 74 Grand Record frame. It needs a paint job badly and I'm thinking of something somewhat heretical.
