Got the tools from REI to do the cassette upgrade. Suddenly I feel I’m underestimating my repair bike skills after 30+ years of doing most of my auto repairs. With the right tools this seems elementary to me. And yes, I now see the wear on the old cassette compared to the new one. I think I’ll make the old one into a clock for my office… because I can.

All upgrades complete! New cassette and 105 chain installed, derailleurs adjusted, and ready for a ride. I think some of the fine tuning problem was related to wear on the cassette. Many lessons learned with these upgrades with some being more expensive than others.

I don't know what the official numbers are but here are my thoughs:

Max width without fenders - probably 38s but clearance would be really light behind the crank. I believe you can see pics in the thread where I show the spacing with the current 35s.
Max width with these fenders - 35c due to the allen screw that is used to mount the fenders. There are wider fenders in the same series for larger tires but I'm not going larger than 35s

Yesterday I grabbed some trail time with a friend. He picked his 2014 CAADX for the ride and I held my own for the 30 mile ride. I'm definitely appreciating the drivetrain upgrades and with a little more fine tuning the bike will be dialed in. My friend was impressed with how quiet it was as we rode.

Now that I have access to an excellent trail system with minimal riding on surface streets, I am considering a move to lighter tires as the current Schwalbe Marathons are heavy and simply overkill. With hindsight being what it is, The Schwalbe Spicer K-Guards that came on the bike really worked well.

I managed to grab a 24 mile solo ride on the OTET yesterday. Beautiful weather and bike was great but the derailleurs need some more adjustment.

Had the Quick out yesterday and achieved my summer goal - ride to Centerburg, Ohio and back on the OTET! It was just shy of 36 miles on rail trails with 1 mile of streets in Sunbury. The ride up felt really good (18 miles) but immediately turned around and stated to feel it about 25 miles. Fortunately the ride home is mostly down hill. Strava shows some personal bests and over 1000 calories burned. I'm working towards a metric century before winter hits but not sure if that will happen.

I like to think that I'm somewhat mechanically inclined, how was your learning curve to do your build? I've done some basic wrenching on my bike but nothing too extensive. Looking to possibly upgrade my drivetrain over the winter. I have some basic hand tools but looks like I'll need some bike specific tools and a decent stand.

Well... I am smart enough to research and prepare as well as foolish enough to try things. I grew up on a farm and worked in my dad's service station during high school. I cut my mechanical teeth during the time of cast iron blocks, aluminum heads, and before MLS headgaskets. I do most of my own car repairs - oil changes, filters, plugs, brakes, half shafts, and wheel bearings. I've rebuilt engines (2.5 Chrysler Turbo II and Kohler K301 single cylinder) so I'm not afraid to try and I know where to turn when help is needed.

As for bike repairs, I found it simple and straight forward with the right tools. I do my research, buy good tools, and go for it. The Park Tools bike stand was life changing for me! Sure it is big and heavy but it's stable and will hold any bike throw at it. (I hope to get a bench mounted version when I have a dedicated space for it.) When it comes to specialty tools, I stick to brand name stuff (Park tools most of the time). My automotive repair experience has taught me that over time, good tools always pay for themselves in time or effort saved. Most of the time I am taking a skill or knowledge from previous experience and applying it to the bike. I'm still learning the tricks of derailluers...

I did body and fender work before I went in the Army and have kept most of my good hand tools when I left, so I definitely understand about having good tools (and the right tools) to do the job. Since I’ve retired I hate to admit I’ve gotten a little lazy. I really need to get off my butt and just dig in, research and give it a shot. I know some people have complained about the price of the Park tools but they’ve obviously never had to buy Snap On tools 😂. Thanks for the info.

A quck look at Strava shows 150+ miles on the 105 upgrade. Time to readjust the deraileurs and go for another ride.

I’ve found the rear shifting on my Q1D to be very sensitive to cable adjustment / tension

this was the case with the original 5800 components and current 6800 / R9100 components

even when set appropriately - shifting can be inconsistent at times - can possibly / probably be traced to the shifter

no green - just red

the Onan powered tractor on the far end is fine - had that one for around 20 years and not one issue ... has around 1000 hours so it is currently semi-retired

the one in the middle (acquired relatively recently - unsure of the history) has the electrical bug ... might be related to the fuse block (Wheel Horse fuse block on Onan powered tractors can be problematic)

of course no issues with the Kohler powered tractor ... it’s like an anvil ...

no green but green could be in our future - ? - was looking at a neat four wheel steer Deere ...

My dad has a 1992 JD 318 with 2200 hours on the original P218 and it's been a great machine for him. He replaced it with a 425 when my brother upgraded to a 455. My father in law has a x724 with the 4-wheel steering - it's a beast!

Sounds like you know the problem areas of your platform. I'd head that direction if it were my machine. With Deeres of the same time period, the common problem areas i see include coils, governor spacer, safety switches, and electronic control module in the dash .

I’ve heard of P224s going 4000-6000 hours on welders and sawmills without a rebuild

have around 1200 hours (?) on one P216 - great runner with zero issues ... I have not had the valve clearance adjustment performed ... ...

the other P216 with the electrical bugs has a little less hours - but hopefully will be able to get more use once the issue is addressed

(hopefully the governor / ‘flyball spacer’ is fine )

a Deere 724 would be sweet !

I managed to grab two different rides over the weekend. The first was Saturday afternoon - a college friend who is returning to cycling after a 30 year break joined me for 14 mile round trip. We rode Galena on the OTET and stopped at The Son of Thurman restaurant for refreshments and then headed back home. He's in the process of converting his mid 90's Hardrock to a dedicated paved trail bike with my assistance.

Yesterday I went for a 10 miler around Westerville and explored some of the many trials of this community. I'm loving the bike friendly vibe and trails. I rode the Towers Trail which follows the path of high voltage power lines through town, followed a few surface streets, and picked up the OTET to get home. It was hot but the breeze was nice. It's definitely a nicer community than my old place in Iowa.

sounds like you are in a nice area - especially if you are in / near the OTET ... Westerville area ... Cuyahoga Valley area ... etc

Ohio has a lot to offer - great manufacturing base (I believe only California and Texas have more manufacturing jobs) - and some great areas / suburbs surrounding the urban areas

Wow, as a new owner of a Quick 1 (bought a month ago, so 2023 model-year), this thread is an amazing resource for potential upgrade paths!

Before I think about upgrading anything mechanical, I need to get fenders. Travis recommended the Bluemels Bicycle Fender Set in size B35 700 x 20-28 but I think the 20-28 mm isn't right as the Quick 1 ships with 32 mm tires by default, if I'm not mistaken. Wouldn't the fender set in size 28-38 be a better fit?

Hey Franz - You are right on the fenders. I think I copied the incorrect link - sorry about that. I am running 35s on it with the current fenders.

I ended up ordering these, they look slightly better in matte black with the stripes (to my eyes at least!):

I hope I didn't mess up the size
