Here is my recently finished street-going '94/95(?) Diamond Back Sorrento. These rigid hardtails seem to make great conversions into burly street commuters. It started out as only a frame and BB. I found it at a garage-estate sale. Tossing in a set of Altus cantilever brakes, an Acera triple crankset, and a 7-spd Hyperglide freewheel, it all cost me under $15. I completed the build from items in my parts bin. I did use a new Selle Royal gel saddle, and a pair of Kenda Kruze tires. The gumwalls gave it a street cruiser look.

As found from CL in the spring. Sticker claims it's a limited edition, 1 of 100. Mix of XCPro and newer shimano. TrueTemper OX Platinum. Really different fork, uses a 1 1/4 threaded headset with a threadless stem. Unfortunately, there's a small crack in the seattube. I've stripped it and waiting to decide what to do with it.

Just picked this up tonight. Not fully original but still a beaut, and most definitely lugged.















1991-92 Bridgestone MB-1. Mixture of stock with a couple replacement parts. Mostly Deore LX and DX but with a Shimano Exage 500ex road crankset...hmmm. Luckily I have a Mountain LX triple with Biopace rings in my parts bin waiting on a bike.

Rear wheel seems original with OEM Ritchey rim on a Deore DX hub, front wheel is replacement Promax Singletrack Expert rim with a STX-RC Parallax front hub. Obviously missing the original Ritchey fork, but the seller had a replacement rigid fork from another Bridgestone MB which he included in the sale.

this could be considered vintage... I guess? well it's on the line. It's an old trek mtb from 1993 from the kid's "jazz" line of bikes. Bold Moves is the model. Shimano Delore LX components, Cro-mo frame. it's a decent bike. It's just a freakin tank is all. I commuted on it for two years.

Great looking MB. Could be a 92 or a 93. They were almost exactly the same with the exception of the 93 having the special fork. Since that part is not there it's hard to say which is might be. Either way.....sweet!

I ordered this bike in Fall 1981. I spoke to both Charles Kelly and Tom about the sizing. I spent a number of calls with Charles. The service was very personalized at that time.

The finished bike was shipped to me in Bangkok, Thailand, arriving in March 1982. My first ride was from Bangkok to Chiang Mai with the Thai Nat'l team in April 1982. In the 90's, I moved to Burma (Myanmar), where I lived for another 10 years. This bike has seen many corners of S.E. Asia.

Sadly, this bike was stolen from my house in Bangkok two years ago. The jerk who stole it was killed a week later in a motorbike accident, but he'd already sold the bike -- FOR $100!!! Unfortunately, I've never been able to track it down.

I loved that bike, and I'm still pissed off about losing it!

When I ordered this bike, it cost more $ than I had in my entire savings. It was over $1,500 in real 1981 dollars. Fortunately, my new job gave me enough to pay off the balance before Tom was ready to ship it. I still have the letters we exchanged as well as my shipping papers.


Royal Thai customs simply could not believe that a bicycle could cost so much. Luckily, I was working for a non-profit with an MOU to waive the customs fees. At the time, being a protected category, the custom fees were 100%!!!


As for the thief's karma, I'd have rather just gotten the bike back. Like losing a ... (I tread on sensitive turf there. Just say it hurt a lot, and still does.)

You jerk, gimme that bike ( GT Timberline was my first MTB, well the FS version). Sadly I rear ended a parked truck and split the frame, the frame sat until recently in my parents yard, and I gave it away to a charity bike building guy. True Story . Sell me that bike

I'd love to but the bike has moved on. My good buddy Tim (who knows nothing of bikes but plenty about engines) was looking for a new bike for his son. In exchange for him helping me rebuild my motorcycle engine, I gave the bike to him. Rest assured, it is in a good home.

I owned this GT Timberline 20 years ago. When I upgraded to a GT Rebound, I traded it with my brother for a BEEPER and air time believe or not. Anyway, he never rode it. He recently wanted his garage cleaned out and it almost went to the garage sale, but he gave me a call and asked if I wanted it back. HELL YEAH I want it back. I had to see it just hanging in his garage all this time. After bringing it home, all I had to do was rebuild the left shifter, repack the hubs, true wheels, replace grips with classic Ritcheys, and clean and regrease drive train. Everything else is completely stock and it rides awesome!!! I will never part with it again.

I had one of those steel GT's. They even ride well on the road. It was the era when MTB's ceased to be touring frames with 26" rims. It was spraybombed black. From the white drizzled paint under the black spraypaint and Deore components, I believe it was a Tequesta. I should have kept it, as it was a nice solid incognito beater. Looked like hell, but rode like new.,,,,BD
